New to Alanon

I'm new to Alanon and was wondering why Alanon people do the 12 steps and have a sponsor?  I thought the 12 steps were for people who have the addiction?

Thanks,

Short answer: because it works!

Longer answer: the steps are not really about quitting drinking. In fact, none of the steps say "... and then we quit drinking". The steps are about building a life. For the alcoholic, it's learning to live without alcohol. For us in Alanon, it's about being able to live our lives, have some peace and serenity whether the alcoholic in our life is still drinking or not.

Barisax has done it both ways... surrounded by alcoholics, and inhabited by one.

I'm also new to Alanon Roxy and only a few weeks ago had the same question.  With my very limited knowledge all I can really say to you is that the programme has helped me tremendosly dealw ith my issues of living with an alcoholic partner.  I felt only a few weeks ago that my whole life was falling apart and I couldn't see anyway out or even a way of coping.  Since coming to this board and also the chat room here I have met so many wonderful people that have given me the support when I most needed it.

I have started working the stepos myself and boy...what a difference they have made to my life.  I have so far to go yet but already feel that I have come so far.  I don't have a sponser but am looking for one.  However, by working the steps I am learning about me.

All I can really say to you is give it a try, they say attend 6 meetings before making your mind up.  I can only speak for myself but during the years of living with my A I have lost myself and by working the steps I am slowly starting to find MYSELF again.

Keep coming back, read the posts and ask as many questions as you can.  The support you get here is tremendous.  I can't thank the people that have answered my questions and been there for me enough.  xx
