Yes, this shows up in a background check. Depending on the position being applied for, the individual performing the background check will or will not be concerned. For example, if someone who wanted to work for a bank had a history of writing fraudulent checks, they are less likely to get the job.
I think the issue is to disclose it and see what they say. Certain things they will overlook. Obviously it depends on the job. There is tremendous competitions for jobs. When the economy is booming it is not such an issue. Well when the economy is booming they don't do as many background checks.
Unless he is applying for a job as a school bus driver or taxi driver or any other "driving" job, I doubt it is an issue.
Do you know how many alcohol abusers/addicts/alcoholics are in this country? And how many of them are men? The numbers are staggering...
My husband himself has two DUI's and it has never stopped him from important jobs. He is asked about it, but he just explains that he was in college and "stupid" and was lead astray and knows better now...HA!
Ok, cynacism aside...
I myself am shocked at how often this works great. It seems that lots of (mostly) men have past DUI's or DWI's and are so very sympathetic to other men who do. Don't be so sure that the (usually) guy threatening the background check also has a DUI or DWI in his past...
I think it depends on what others have said, how many people are applying for this job and what your husband's background is. If he is applying for a professional job, one requiring some sort of degree or certification it is a lot less of an issue then if this is a "man of the street" job.
If you had a choice to hire a law breaker, or someone with a clean record...who would you hire?
My husband's lawyer told him never to disclose his convictions unless confronted with them. He was told that LOTS of jobs "say" they will do background checks...hoping to weed out people with records for "free" as people openly disclose what they feel pressured to do. Background checks cost money...and they are not done routinely. They usually are not REALLY done unless someone is really interested in hiring you. If they are that interested in you, usually a past DUI or DWI is not a big deal, they are worried about felonies, specifically violent crimes. This according to husband's lawyer.
If you don't disclose and you get checked out and busted, just say that was in a "different past life" and really has "nothing to do with the person you are today" so that is why you did not disclose it. You could also say it was so long ago that you did not think it would show up...and you no longer think about it.
Hey, that worked for husband #1 all of the time!
If a DUI or DWI really bothers them then it is best to not disclose. That way if he confesses he is sure to not get the job. If he does not disclose, he has a chance they won't find out and the background check is just a ploy to weed more people out easily.
I have found out that life is different for men when they are dealing with other men, seriously. I have been simply flabbergasted at how much other men let husband get away with that a woman never would in the business world.
