C2C, Monday, 2/26, create a better future

This reading points out that we all make mistakes, but we can grow in self-awareness and learn from our mistakes.  When mistakes happen we can make amends for any harm we've done, and we can try not to repeat them again.  These experiences can help us create a better future.  The reading goes on to say that shame is an excuse to hate ourselves for something we did or didn't do.  It is important to realize that we did the best we could do at that time.  All human beings make mistakes.  The reminder says that we can love ourselves enough to recognize shame as an error in judgement.  In part the quote says that we need to learn unconditional love, not only for others but for ourselves.

I relate to this reading because I had self-hate for many years, along with shame for my own behavior and that of others close to me.  My spouse's drinking and driving horrified me.  I pulled away from family and friends because I could not understand or accept what my life had become.  I was not drinking and driving, but the shame I felt was as thought I was doing it or causing it.  Alanon has taught me many amazing things--I can love the person but hate the disease, I will never be perfect but I am still worthy of love, and I can enjoy my life no matter what others are doing.  I do regret not coming to alanon sooner, but better late than never. :)q
