The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I havent done much reading on the slogans but lately when different situations arise Ive been finding myself thinking "How important is it?", "Let Go Let God", etc. What slogans help you the most?
I tend to use the Serenity prayer more than anything, followed closely by Let go and Let God. Now that I think about it though One day at a time is in my head every morning.
My A was hospitalizd and came close to death two times.
My Mother in law died 5 days after A was released from hosp
My son was in accident, wrecked his 6 week old car
Insurance gave us 700.00 less then what we paid. (totaled)
Due to miscommunication, A recieved only half of his temp disabilty check.
Slogan used constantly: THIS TOO SHALL PASS
The difference in me before and after Alanon? I truly believe it, This too shall pass. I am not focused on the previous list of these things. What I choose to focus on is:
I'm very grateful my husband is OK and sober.
My mother in law left this earth knowing her son was sober ( a great source of worry for her).
My son was not hurt when he got hit (Thank you HP)
We lost 700.00, but ironically found a different car for 700.00 less then what insurance paid.
Shorted on check: It's only money, we'll get by.
It's going to take a lot more then this to rock the serenity that I found through Alanon. (*knocks on wood)

Barbara, that is so neat that alanon is really becoming part of your life. As you go on more and more things like that will happen. Even to the point of accepting A's just as they are, and not taking the poison from the Aism to your heart.
In the big book I think it is, someone is saying the slogans are corny. But their simplicity is what makes them so wonderful. That is what makes me love the book,"Getting Them Sober." It is so easy to read, and is very true and touching.
I have my, "Love the A, hate the Disease."
Anyway look at your progress. It is so awesome. love, debilyn
When I first got to al-anon I thought slogans were....whats the word..mmmmmm...trite?
Didnt have much use for them.
The Serenity Prayer was the first thing I grabbed a hold of. Especially the first line...."God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change"
As time went by...the slogans I kept hearing over and over started to have meaning for me too and I started hearing myself say them.
Think! Keep It Simple! Let Go and Let God! How Important is It?
But I think right now anyway, that my favorite, cuz it seems to keep my side of the street the cleanest, and allows me the most opportunity for personal growth is,
This is a good topic. Barbara I am so glad you are able to use and work your program. I tend to think about things I have read the the "Getting Them Sober" books. Like--it's what they do (this in particular when he has lied to me). I also think "It is killing him", when I think I have been put in pain by him--I think about the pain he is really causing himself--it's killing him. (Then my pain doesn't seem so big).
(and when necessary, it can be broken down into whatever we need - one hour, one minute, one second!!)
99% of the time when I get overwhelmed with fears, etc., I have allowed myself to get out of the present, and focussing way too much on the future.... When I manage to stay in the "today", life seems far less unmanageable...
