my precious son

hi all, i just got back from an award ceremony at my son's school.  I was sent something a few weeks ago saying he would be presented a special award, which of course made me feel warm inside, and when i found out what it was, i was in tears, below is why.

My oldest son is from a previous marriage, a broken marriage.  He in the past has had a temper like you would not believe, which i'm sure he picked up from me in my sicker days and his father as well.  He was so brutal to the animals and his brothers, i was fearful something more was going on inside him then just normal kid stuff.  I have been working on making an ammends to him for my anger i would give him in return for these actions, and have been trying to teach him very, very, very hard about how we take care of each other, look out for each other and dont hurt.  In fact we only have 3 rules in this house;

1 we dont hurt peoples bodies or hearts,

2 we dont break things on purpose

3 we dont argue with adults.

I came up with these 3 because i was driving myself and them crazy trying to make them into perfect little children who always act that way. lol yeah right.  So i tried applying the "how important is it" slogan to my childrearing and omg what a difference.  I figure, if it doesn't fall in one of those 3 catagories, it really doesn't matter.

anyway, what i'm getting at is, my son was given an award today from the kiwanis club that reads

"Self Control is doing what's right so that people can count on you.  You think carefully about what will happen if you do, or if you dont do something.  You are responsible when you make choices so that you dont hurt anyone or let your family and friends down.  Devon uses self control, even when no one is watching him.  He follows the rules, uses good judgement, and thinks before he acts."

When they read that off, my eye's swelled with tears, my heart with pride, and my head said "you doing good momma, your doing good."  His father came to the ceremony as per my request, and agreed with me that off all the awards the school gives out throughout the year, this one from the kiwanis club holds more value then any other out there.

So anyway, this proud momma had to share the power this program and hp can have with children too, so much depends on our additudes.

love ya all, thanks for letting me brag, heehee trina

Mastiff,

Bet your son was real proud of himself.  Give yourself a big pat on the back for teaching him something so important.  The skill of self control will take him far in life.

That is awesome. I don't believe in a ton of rules either, just Respect mostly like you.  I think if they have that everything else should fall into place.

Another reason I have chosen to leave my marriage, we can't agree on my children!

Do your Happy Dance! You deserve it.

Trina,

Parenting is a tough job with few rewards and many doubts. What great validation for your son and you. Enjoy and thanks for sharing that inscription about self control.

In support,

Nancy

(((((Mastiff))) and, ((((((Mastiff's son)))))),

Made my eyes swell with tears, are you sure I had no input - feel so proud!!!!!!

Someone told me, only one rule in my house, we respect each other. I so wish i had heard this earlier, when I was bringing up three stroppy, headstrong kids.

Pat yourself on the back, Trina, your son is a credit to you.

Lots of love,

flora

That's awesome. It's so nice to hear good, positive things on this forum. It's a real "pick-me-up." The proud feeling we have for our children is one of the best feelings around. Be proud of yourself as a parent too...you deserve it!
