Recovery

Recovery, what is it? What does it look like? How can I get it?

I looked at many definitions, many of which applied to alcohol and drug addiction. Since I am not an alcoholic nor am I addicted to drugs (still working on my caffeine addiction), I was not comfortable with these definitions. Then, I found this one, Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. This one fits me. When I look at key words in this definition, I immediately see the word process. I know process is a means of doing something. Process is not immediate but more like a series of steps. And whatever steps I choose, my achievement goal is health and wellness, a more self-directed life and reaching my full potential.

What does it recovery look like? This is the only way I can describe recovery. Its the calmness after a storm. Its the sun breaking through the dark clouds bringing hope of a better time. Its the gentle breeze that sooths a trouble soul over loss. Its letting go of the things that were broken or destroyed during the storm and rebuilding comfort for myself. Its understanding that I need help cleaning up the mess the storm has caused and knowing that this clean-up will take time.

How can I get it? My recovery is coming through my HP and Al-Anon. Through the guidance of my HP, I am learning to use the Al-Anon tools for my recovery process. The Steps and Traditions, slogans, meetings, my sponsors, and service are what keep me focused on my recovery. Im not there yet, and I may never be fully recovered, because its a process, a journey.

This morning, during my Al-Anon reading, these quotes from C2C captured my attention.

We all have dark times in our lives, but the journey to better times is often what makes us happier, stronger people. When we stop expecting instant relief, we may come to believe that where we are today is exactly where our Higher Power would have us be.

I pray for all who are recovering from alcoholism and its effects.

Take one day at a time and Let go and let God!

It works if you work it.
