After being near death twice lately from alcohol poisoning...

and having been air lifted to Philadelphia in order to survive last time, I found him drinking listerine mouth wash.  It is a pitiful situation, and, of course it's all my fault, even though he was a drinker long, long before I met him.  I didn't know this; and had I known, I'd have run fast in the opposite direction.  I expect him to die this time, and to quote Rhett Butler, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."  He's in God's hands now.  I have long since washed mine.  Have any of my friends here come to the point of no longer caring?  There's a sort of freedom in it, but I will always be sorry our love died because of his alcoholism.

Best wishes and love to all here, Diva

Oh Diva, I'm holding you in my thoughts and prayers. Either way, this is tough. I know you've been through the mill.
All the best to you.

Hugs Diva,

Sooo sorry for the pain and devastation that this disease wraughts on our loved ones. There can come a point especially with sig others that the line is finally crossed and that's all there is to it.

It sounds like he's in so much pain at this point, may he find relief in whatever route this takes him. That addiction to ethyl alcohol is devastating and they will find out how to get it anyway they can. I think about the shoe polish story that one recovering A shared about what the drunks did in the 30's .. I just can't imagine going to that kind of extreme. That's the ultimate price to pay.

Hugs S

Although I've never gotten to the point of not caring with my x or with my son, I did get to the point where I had had enough of a lot of stuff and made some changes that were necessary for me to take good care of myself.

Thanks for your replies.  It is good to come here where people care.  After living with this "surprise" drunk for 13 years, I have had enough.  It's that simple.   I have not lived with him for more than a year, but his presence is like an evil spectre still haunting me.  Probably I could never turn my back on my child, but this man has destroyed our marriage, himself, and nearly me in the process.   My heart is totally destroyed, but I am a survivor, where he is not.  One never thinks their later years will find them in an untenable situation after having lived an idyllic life always before.  It doesn't seem fair that at the time when we retire and can do what we want to do when we want to do it that someone  comes along who seems like a dream come true, but turns out to be bent upon the destruction of everything within his grasp.

Diva I do hear you and so understand. My son relapsed the year before I retired and the next 4 years were brutal. Prayers and positive thoughts on the way.
