A wonderful lady told me at an al anon meeting something that continues to stick with me - she said "We are only human".... and as simple as that statement is, it really stuck with me because she is so right. Sometimes I feel that because I may get angry or react in ways that I shouldn't with my alcoholic, I get so down on myself with regret. But when I keep reminding myself that I am ONLY HUMAN and not superwomen or superrescuer, it take a lot of the pressure off. As long as a human continues trying, that's all that matters. Mistakes are part of life - and I also have to remember that my alcoholic is only human too. Sigh. It's odd that such a simple saying had so much affect on me lol
Anyways just thought id share that - it helped me a lot so maybe it will help someone else too
I agree. We are certainly human and this disease often helps us believe we are superhuman - able to leap tall buildings and cure people of what we think ails them. Al-Anon helped me see how often I put my god suit on and expected more of myself than any one human being could ever accomplish comfortably. Being perfect was something I thought I needed to be. I would browbeat myself for not being that perfect creature I thought I needed to be to feel approved, appreciated and loved. I also discovered all the other "perfect" people I rubbed shoulders with at times could be incredibly cold, always right and usually suggesting ways others could improve when the others had never asked. Thank heavens I fell off my white horse and landed in the mud. I never would have discovered the truth about me. I WAS human, prone to error and able to hang out better with myself and other imperfect people without wearing that "perfect" mask that everybody could see through anyway. Thanks for the share, Carly.
Ah yes!!! I forgot to mention - we are human - which means FLAWED!! That's basically what I was getting at - no ones perfect so why do we think we need to be??? I like that " thanks heavens I fell off my white horse and landed in the mud" haha so true!! Thanks for the reply <3
