What is the permalink area I see near our quote, reply buttons?

Has it always been there and I missed it or is it new and just added?  Regardless of either answer, what does it do or what is permalink meant to do?  Does anybody know?

A permalink (portmanteau of permanent link) is a URL that points to a specific blog or forum entry after it has passed from the front page to the archives. Because a permalink remains unchanged indefinitely, it is less susceptible to link rot. Most modern weblogging and content-syndication software systems support such links. Other types of websites use the term permanent links, but the term permalink is most common within the blogosphere. Permalinks are often simply rendered so as to be human-readable.

OK....Not sure how to use it here but that's what is means.

What?????!!!!!!!! Is there a Permalink for Dummies book? I'm trying to understand this and I have to admit I don't. Is there a layman's definition of a permalink, sister?

Assuming you are using Internet Explorer, if you hover over the permalink, you will see a link displayed below in your status bar. If you the right click on it, then click "Copy shortcut", you will have the link of the page you are looking at in your copy/past buffer.

If you now open a new tab in Internet Explorer, and copy the link into the address bar on that page, you will come back to the page you are looking at. it is handy to have if you are referencing a certain page, either from within MIP, or outside as well.

For example, I just copied a permalink from an old thread that I started here:   http://alanon.activeboard.com/t56118996/alternative-meanings-for-mip/

Does that help?  Hopefully your links aren't rotting wink

Kenny

Your post is now on my desktop, Kenny. I think that is what is supposed to happen according to the instructions I think I followed correctly? My links probably are rotting along with other things like skin elasticity, a waistline, and memory cells.

Thank you all - for the LOL and the scratching hand on the head, too, sisters and Kenny. I have a little better picture of what a permalink is than I did when I asked the question.

And Paula - that piece is still so striking to look at for me. Keep them coming, sister. They are beautiful.
