Got stuck in the quicksand but didn't go down!

Hello-Well yesterday morning my A asked me one question and in a nano-second I was back to my old self, pre-alanon brain.  We had a very unpleasant talk, not a fight really, and both set out for our days in a less than pleasant mood.  I stayed angry all day yesterday.  Doesn't she remember the drinking, the lying, the wasting money, drinking while driving, treating my like crap, etc., etc., etc.  I started thinking I really haven't made any progress at all.  I was right back where I was-angry, resentful, and in pain.  And then, I remembered a little task my sponsor has given me.  Review the day, what went well and what didn't.  I checked myself and realized by going back to that awful place, I am giving my A the power over me, and I can stay there and suffer all I want, or I can turn it over and move on.  I turned it over to HP!  I let go.  And it worked!  Only one day of suffering compared with 8 yrs in the past.  Yippeeee.  Today I'm good, I can stay in this day, and I have choices.  I choose to feel better.  Lyne :0)

Dear Lyne,

Thank you for your powerful share on the 10th step. Working the steps is not guarantee that we will not slip back into old behavior. It helps to clear up the damage and resentments from the past, provides valuable information on how to respond in the future but alas we are all too human and sometimes take a few steps back.

That is when the 10th step really works. It keeps us current, aware and able to make amends in the present rather than build up resentment, shame and guilt.

You did well. Congratulations on working the steps, sharing with a sponsor and pursuing your recovery.

I am glad you are sharing the journey

OH, this was an awesome share!! I love reviewing my day like that, too. It humbles me and reminds me that it's never too late to start my day over.
