" Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional."
"Serenity is when your body and mind are in the same place."
I was in San Francisco in 2007. Multiple weeks of blizzard-like weather battered my hometown and my friends and family in it. I was happily engaged for three weeks during the worst of their winter weather, walking every day, riding cable cars, going to Al-Anon meetings, church, sight-seeing, visiting Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown and a host of other beautiful things in 50 to 60 degree weather which to me was very, very nice. It didn't even rain while I was there until the day I went home. A few of my hometown friends and family said: "I'll bet you feel guilty being there while we're going through such tough weather here." I was honest. "Nope. I can't say that I feel anything but grateful." I tried to muster up some empathy for them at the time. I just couldn't. I was too grateful for seeing hummingbirds in January, tropical flowers, dry pavement and seals at play in the Bay. I tried to cheer them up a bit by letting them in on how expensive everything was in CA, but....they couldn't seem to muster up much empathy for me either.
