I have started reading about what triggers an A to start drinking again once they have stopped for a period of time. Any insight on this? Thanks, Jenny
In my experience, slacking of meetings, fellowship, step work are what then make an alcoholic susceptible to "triggers." If we are working a solid AA program, nothing is really a "trigger." If not, any stupid thing can be a trigger. Being "in program" allows me to deal with life on life's terms. It's that simple.
There is absolutely NOTHING I CAN DO OR SAY THAT WILL CAUSE AN ALCOHOLIC TO DRINK, THEY DRINK BECAUSE THEY CHOOSE TO BE DRUNK, MORE THAN THEY CHOOSE TO BE SOBER...
I used to walk on eggshells not to cause my A's to drink, hmmm, but now with al-anon I know there is no amount of tip toeing around going to keep them from what they do best and crazy making blame comes with that for me. So I walk head held high and don't duck at noises anymore. I say what I mean, mean what I say without saying it mean. I take good care of me and have completely detached from feeling responsible for grown people taking care of themselves. Don't get me wrong I love my A's and always will. Al-anon and my sponsor helped me to stay on my side of the street and to stop trying to make sense of something I could never understand. I did not cause it, I can't control it, nor can I cure it otherwise I would have done so by now and alcoholism and other addictions would no longer exist. My A's have their own HP and I have mine that can handle all that I can not, which is a lot and I don't mind handing it over these days. Sending you much love and support on your journey!
