How do you get a sponsor???

Ok so I found an Al-Anon group that I like I have attended four meetings there. I don't know how to ask someone to sponsor me. I really need a sponsor. I have grown and achieved about all I can on my own. Im stuck and starting to regress. I absolutly HATE!!!!! asking for help! I am a very proud and self sufficient person by nature. I don't know how to get past this character flaw and ask some one to help me.

I am glad to hear you want a sponsor, they are priceless. When I was attending my first sveral meetings I was watching and listening intently for someone who was working a program that I admired. My sponsor and I kind of chose each other and she took me under her wing and I was very lucky for that. She had lots of years in Al-anon which is very helpful and I love my wise old sponsor. Keep attending the meetings and someone will come apparent as a good choice and if you find that person you may have to ask and they may be too busy, but that is how it works for the most part. Others may have better ESH on this subject for you. Sending you love and support on your journey!

Or you could do what nobody told me you could do: raise your hand in an open discussion and announce "I need a sponsor; is there anyone willing to be my temporary sponsor?" Oftentimes temporaries turn into permanents, but at least there's no long term commitment if they (and you) "sign up" for temporary.

Hi Rellik

Each meeting is different I attend meetings where we have a telephone listing and a list of people who will sponsor.

I really like "Breaking free's" idea of listening for someone who shares program. Who sounds s if they Walk the Walk and not just Talks the Talk.

We are all in program because we have the same reactions to this disease. One of these reactions are that we like to do it alone. We cannot ask for help. That is why program is so important. We learn how to take care of ourselves from a very basic point of view. To ask for help.

Pray about it and ask Good luck

6.      Q. What is a Sponsor and How do I get one?

A.  A sponsor is a guide.  Someone who will help you to become acquainted with the Al-Anon program and will encourage you on your road to recovery.

To get a sponsor, you merely ask someone in the program that you think might be able to help you, preferably someone who has been in the program longer than you, that exhibits some quality that you find attractive.

It is possible to have sponsors online, by asking someone you see in the chat room or on the board that has what you want.  It would be preferable to ask this person in private via private message.

Do not be afraid to ask someone to sponsor you.  Sponsorship is one of the greatest privileges of recovery.  If the person says they cannot sponsor you, dont take it personal.  Some people dont feel they are ready yet, others may already be sponsoring as many people as they can handle currently.  Just find another person and ask until you can find someone willing!
