12th Step ~ sponsoring, etc

I'm new here - my sponsor just told me about this site.  I just spent HOURS reading the many posts and I really wish I had known about this a couple years ago.

my son (20yrs old) went to rehab last summer, had one brief relapse and is currently doing ok.    Prior to last summer we went through hell.   I'm sure you all know...

I found Alanon about three years ago but didnt start working steps until a year ago.  What a miracle it has been.... literally saved ME from ME!   My life holds so much hope now...and a peace that I have never felt (I thought all my 'problems' started when DS started drugs - boy was I wrong!).

My sponsor has told me that I am ready to sponsor and suggested - because most of my free time is late evenings and early mornings - that I look into online sponsoring...or finding a situation where I could meet F2F once in a while and do most communication via email etc.

My question is: have any of you done this?   If so, do you have tips/hints on how it works, was it helpful to you? etc..... it seems kind of 'odd' to me but I'll admit the idea of it seems perfect --I do so much better putting my thoughts into writing than verbal words and the times that I'm available to meet are odd.

just curious to know if people DO this very often ?

Thanks for being here!   I wish I had found you long long ago!!

Aloha CM...I learned that my recovery was supported by the experience I got from working it and so I do well in some areas and poorer in others.  If you can succeed in sponsoring with written communication rather than face to face most often I'd say ask your HP for the guidance and keep moving with it.  Having done the steps is very important for me so I got serious about sponsoring after I had good experiences working the program which included all the steps otherwise I was handing off sponsees and potential sponsees to others rather than building the relationship continuously.  I loved the "personal" relationships with my sponsors the on/off program inter-reactions because I got exposed to more of how we did many different aspects of life in recovery.  Because of that I think my recovery is well rounded.

Sponsoring is awesome.  I get to watch the miracles and smile, smile, smile without taking responsibilities for them.   Go for it and congradulations to both you and your son.   ((((hugs)))) smile

Keep coming back.

PS...one of the things one of my early sponsors taught me was about allowing my sponsees to teach me and at times be a sponsor.   It comes under the heading of "being humble".

SSounds like a great idea, I love having a face to face sponsor. For some it may be the perfect solution. Sending you love and support!
