New

I am new here, but not "new" to life living with achoholism.  As far back as I can remember it has been affecting life.  My grandpa died of liver failure b4 I even got to know him.  I have no real memories of him.  My dad my brother and two cousins also have the disease.  I was married for 27 years to a compulsive gambler,  He died a sudden death at 51 leaving me with no life insurance and $150,000 in debt.  I married a recovered achoholic 4 years ago,  about two years ago he started drinking again, now he drinks everyday.  Unmanagable? Very!  I had'd thought I worked the steps in al-anon before.  Well, I went to the meetings, but I don't think I really got the message until now.  I have been attending online mettings.  I admitt I am powerless, and life has become unmanagable.  I need to help me.

I can't fix everyone, I have been trying to forever...I lost myself.  I don't know who I am or how I fit.  I love my hubby, with all I am.  Time to love myself that way too!!

Thanks

Welcome Lisa. I hope this time is the charm. You certainly have a lot of experience to bring to this web site. Keep reading and try to find your meetings again. It will get better.

Hi Lisa. My mother in law was in al-anon for a long time but never worked the steps or got a sponsor, and though its just suggested, which is great for anyone who is not ready yet, I really do think its crucial for recovery. Welcome to the boards and welcome back to al-anon. I hope this time around you feel that courage to change take over you!!!

 Welcome Lisa

Glad to hear that you have been attending on line meetings and have been to face to face meetings in the past. Just in case you would like to further break the isolation Face to Face meetings in your community can be found at the following link:

http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/meetings/meeting.html

I can so identify with the quote that I selected from your message. I too lost myself in the process of trying to fix everyone else.

Alanon gave me the tools needed to love others and not to abandon myself in the process.

Glad you are here sharing the journey. We are not alone

Welcome , please keep going to your f2f meetings on line is just not enough , you miss so much by not attending real meetings .. just my opinion . When obsessed with helping other people we loose ourselves its time to focus on your needs  for a change , your on the right track dont stop now . Louise

Welcome and agreed this is a wonderful tool to use with regular face to face meetings. It helps me keep a pulse to what it is I need to be doing in my own recovery.

Hugs P :)

I live in a really small town.  One meeting a week.  Am not so sure I would be able to speak freely their.  Alot of gossip in this community, and I am fairly new here

I fully understand where you are coming from, if you can I would encourage to go outside of your town if it's that big of an issue for you. Face to face meetings, private counseling (at this point I'm doing both) if you can't go to meetings, .. it's important to hear as well as read and share. There are some great ways to listen to past alanon speakers which is through iTunes .. other people have other sites however it's in the podcasts .. you can type in alanon and it brings up a lot of information as far as different speakers to listen to. There are also AA speakers as well. Podcasts can be found elsewhere I listen to stuff on my iPod sooo that's where I gravitate.

I'm also in a small town and you might be surprised who winds up being at those meetings and no one says you need to say anything either. I have found the people who go to alanon meetings value the confidentiality of the program and to the best of my knowledge, are trustworthy people. There is literally something read at each meeting an opening and a closing that states what is heard in these 4 walls stays here (I'm paraphrasing .. lol). If that is an issue believe me there are ways to address it.

It's up to you to figure out what you need and how you need to heal. Without the program of alanon the face to face meetings for me it would have been a much longer road and I'm grateful that I did take the risk and attend the meetings.

Hugs P :)
