The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I have read so many great Al-anon books and as much as I loved "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews and "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie and I read my daily readers too.
I think "Perfect Daughters" by Robert J. Ackerman Ph.D. hit me just as hard if not harder. It is written for daughters, but I can't see how like with Toby Rice Drews who writes generally towards women, it couldn't be useful for either gender.
The book broadened my awareness and I feel growth already and am rereading it again. So it left me wondering what other books people would suggest?

The ACOA group I go to, they work out of Melanie Beattie's "Language of Letting Go". Its similar to the alanon daily readers, in that it has a topic for each day... I think there is a second book to that as well. Check amazon. Does the ACOA website have any other literature info? Hmmm.... I am going to look for Perfect Daughters. Thanks again for that....

I am starting In All Our Affairs, Making Crisis Work for You. It came recommended and it's alanon lit. From what I have glanced through at this point it is really an amazing share of ESH and applying the steps. Another one is From Survival to Recovery, that is for people who have grown up in alcoholic homes, (my decent that way wasn't until I was 15) it still applies to me and how I have felt growing up. That's the book we work out of with Pathways to Recovery on Sundays we are doing step work.
Hugs P :)

I read the book that Tom references and it is considered the "bible" for ACOA's. It's definitely a useful book but for some reason I didn't get as much out of it as I had hoped.
"Homecoming" by John Bradshaw was extremely powerful to me and got me thinking about things I had buried my entire life. It's not conference approved literature but it's certainly a book that anyone who has grown up with alcoholism can find incredibly useful.
i dont want to read any books like this and just want move on with my life...but i cant believe i spent my whole life without them! I needed them REaLLY badly when i was in my teens and twenties and thirties.....but i didnt have access to the resources. Its good when people get the benefit of them, and i hope more yung people are getting access to the help due to amazon- and the internet etc.xxx
