Battling the overwhelming

I'm not kidding when I say that my grass is 4 feet tall in some places around my yard - places I can't reach with the riding mower. When I walk around my yard I fight dispair because its SO much work - every single step around the yard shows me things I have to try to get done. I used to have a handle on it, before I married him. He said he liked doing yard work, but didn't do ours, more like just added to the problem by piling stuff up so the grass could grow around it. What a mess.

So...... I'm taking one small project at a time. Today I planted a lavendar bush I bought almost two months ago, hope it survives; sprayed round-up on some of the tall weeds, sprayed down and replanted the birdbath so the dog can steal their water and knock it over, dumb dog. Thing I was thinking is this: its a lot like getting my life back in order and making progress back towards sanity - one small step at a time, focusing on one thing not the whole thing and looking at what I've accomplished not what I haven't done yet.

Helps to have good weather finally! Cheers.

Like myheart thats a great and significant place to start, kind of like pulling all the ugly weeds out of your life. Our lives can only be strong if we are rooted,
we need to live strong. You are showing that you will not shrink from the obstacles and hardships you are facing.

Your building your garden, where you are the hero of your life and to keep moving forward.

It can only get better. Luv, Bettina

You cannot eat an elephant all in one bite.  The proper way to eat an elephant is slowly, one mouthful at a time....

Good for you in taking things slowly, and savour each bite!!

Oh likemyheart, I am so happy that you will be getting outdoors. I know if I do things little by little that I am amazed at how much I have accomplished.

Have fun with it!

biggrin Your dumb dog made me laugh...Least he is not boring!

OH hon I so relate. That is what made me move to where the woods is my yard, landlord can fix things.

I can have little flower beds and not get od'ed.

I did what you're doing for years. Finally I just had to make the decision to take care of me.

Cannot tell you how this new chapter of my continuing life is soooooo much better.

Not feeling overwhelmed is so much off my shoulders.

btw be careful with Roundup or anything like that with your dog or cat.

I had to sit down and think about, what do you really want.

Hugs,debilyn

thanks for this post. Good way to look on the positive side - what have I done and accomplished as opposed to dwelling on what I haven't done. tks for the reminder. Today I managed to get out of bed and go to work despite a migraine, I planned something I was putting off, and I got rid of 5 garbage bags of old clothes and junk! yay me.
I'll worry about all those dandelions tomorrow! ;)

I don't want to eat an elephant, probably just tastes like chicken.... wonder why so many people are anti-dandelion? They really do have the most beautiful flowers, guess its the bees they attract, hate stepping on them and getting stung. I like to watch kids play with dandelions that have gone to seed, blowing them all over to make more. I managed to get one big bag of garbage off my back porch too, stirred up a lot of dust doing it - and about elephant meat - do you put Ketchup on it? Dijon mustard? Have fries with it? however do you prepare elephant? ewww, just occurred to me to wonder if some cultures DO eat elephant - sounds like an internet search coming on - Cheers and happy weekend to you all!

I too feel overwhelmed sometimes. We have almost an acre of yard, and the growing season here is all year 'round. Add that to the repairs and work needed to the house and sometimes it's almost too much. Yep, as others have mentioned-small steps, projects at a time. I pick one or two specific small things to do-weed this flower bed, cut back the vines taking over the fence, etc. Once that is done I can at least see some progress and that makes it easier to tackle the next thing. ((likemyheart))), your last post sounds much more positive and cheerful than your first post so you must be doing something right! Happy weekend back at you too.

Love your post. THanks! Today I am going to fix my flower bed up, we had some major rain here this week that pretty much messed the whole thing up...mulch all pushed around etc. Anyway, it is baby steps and doing little by little...we will get there :) Thanks again!

I find gardening very therapeutic when I am down but this afternoon I was mowing the lawn with an electric mower and ran over the cable! Huge, scary BANG which shut down all the power in our house (I was mowing the front lawn and it was plugged into a socket in the hallway) Fortunately I just had to flick the switch on the fuse-box to restore the power but it means buying a new mower! Just what I need - Not!

For me I just take small actions when I get overwhelmed with the details of life. I ask God to help direct me to the next right thing to do. Before I know it, everything gets done. Little by little, one day at a time.

I don't know about elephant tasting like chicken however the recipie I have for elephant stew requires 600 pounds of carrots peeled and chopped and likewise with russet potatoes...salt to taste along with pepper and seat places for approximately 800 guests.  If a few more guests show up keep a skinned and dressed rabbit available along with carrots and potatos but don't combine the two as nobody likes Hare in their elephant stew.    Remember to keep and open mind...you'll get it.   Thanks Tom this is my laugh for the day.   I thought it was earlier when I got a little light headed and thought there might be something to this "rapture" thing and then it cleared up and I figured I got left behind.  Dang!!   ((((hugs)))) smile

yuck well I am a vegetarian the thought of eating an intelligent, loving creature like an elephant is overwhelming to me.

haha

I agree ONE step at a time got me thru years of mud, cold and tears keeping animals cared for.

And now it is the same. If I thought about it honestly doing it all alone could really sounds like too much.

Little at a time feels good.

It looks better too dear when we eat right, drink good water, and get good rest.

You  MUST cuddle and play with that dumb dog of yours. Its the most theraputic thing. What won't be when he digs in or lays on your flowers...hugs,deb

Overwhelming grass growth or not, the Earth deserves better treatment than having round up sprayed all over it. Our health and happiness as humans relies completely on the health of the Earth, and so a good place to start is to take care of it....then you may find everything becoming a lot easier.

I understand not wanting to poison the earth, I used to have time and energy to pull the weeds but, with all the bills i have to pay, I don't have the luxury of either - plus we live in farm country and they seed the nearby farm from the air so I get a lot of wheat - biggest problem is the city ordinances that prohibit having such an overgrown mess of a yard and I don't want the landlord cited. I find great peace in a warm evening or morning spent pulling weeds but, sometimes you have to do things you'd rather not in life eh?

My original purpose for posting this was to express the thought that we have such big problems in our lives and if we look at the whole problem all at once it looks huge and insurmountable. The hope is that by taking the little steps we feel up to and not focusing on the big picture we can make progress toward our goals. I like to walk and recently took on a bigger than me hike down and then up a really steep hill - with my ankle aching I had to concentrate on not falling again (#1 priority) and taking just one step at a time to get to where I wanted to be, stopping a lot to take a breath and look around me - I got where I was going by going one step at a time and not looking at how big a job I'd taken on. oh and Deb - the dumb dog is a she, soon to be an it, she's adorable except when she destroys my plants, not eat them, just tears them up then looks at me with that cocked eared look - loves chasing bubbles (blech, talk about tasting icky) and the water from the hose (good way to bathe her), thinks the cats are her play toys and thinks anything I plant is something for her to dig up. Hoping fixing her will help in THAT area! Cheers
