I look forward to the day when I can be of help to others here. Tonight, I am new, and I could use some support. My son Ben is 30 and is an alcoholic. He also suffers from agoraphobia. Until very recently, he was unable to leave the house. He has received good treatment and is able to make short car rides and go into a few stores, restaurants, etc. However, he is drinking heavily. He has expressed a desire to quit, but until now, was not able (because of the agoraphobia) to attend any treatment. I am pretty much the only person in his life who has helped him to this point, so we are very close. This rollercoaster ride is making my life crazy, however. I am seeing a counselor and I am trying to find a local Al-Anon meeting. I divorced my husband (an alcoholic) 20 years ago. The pain I experienced during my marriage was nothing compared to this pain I am experiencing with my son. Thanks for listening. I will read other entries on the boards now and I look forward to meeting some of you.
I am fairly new here as well, so not much wisdom from me, but you are in the right place.
Have you been to any local face to face al-anon meetings? They usually will give you some free literature and have pamphlets and books you can purchase there and of course they offer support.
You can check your local phone book for meetings or go to the world service website: http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/
There are 2 meetings a day here on-line in the chat room. Check the schedule, I believe it's 9am and 9pm eastern M-F and some weekend meetings as well.
You will find lots of support here and f2f.
Sending hugs.

Aloha Terese...your son will be best helped by other recovering alcoholics and you can call the local AA central phone number and ask if they have fellows that make house calls. Best if your son makes the call however they will listen to you also. give it a shot and let us know. ((((hugs))))
I AM SO SORRY AND AGREE THAT THE PAIN OF AN ALCOHOLIC HUSBAND DOES NOT EQUAL THE PAIN OF AN ALCOHOLIC CHILD.
THAT SAID, I FOUND THAT ATTENDING ALANON MEETINGS. FOCUSING ON MYSELF, LIVING ONE DAY AT A TIME. NOT PROJECTING, BEING COMPASSIONATE, AND PRAYING. HELPED TO MAINTAIN MY SANITY AND LIFE.
PLEASE TRY THIS PROGRAM YOU NEED HELP AND SUPPORT
