Choices

Rwandan Proverb:  "If you are building a house and a nail breaks, do you stop building or change the nail?"

When something happens that throws off our recovery do we give up?  Do we stop and do nothing?  Or do we change course? Do we try something new?  When we find a meeting that we don't like, do never go back?  Or do we look for a meeting that we like?  Do we look for new ways to add to our recovery? Do we find a new nail?  Or do we keep hammering away with the same broken nail and expect that the house will be finished and stand strong?

Life is about choices and the consequences of making those choices.  We are all adults (addicts too) and the choices we make are up to us.  We have to allow the addicts the dignity of making choices, good or bad and living with the consequences of them.

As codependents we are allowed to make choices and live with the consequences.  If we choose not to work our program, if we choose to continually be miserable and not seek out guidance and help, then we know the consequences of those choices.  However if we choose to accept life on life's terms and move forward, then we reap the rewards of those choices.  The consequences will be bountiful.

When we get thrown a rusty nail what do we do with it? Keep using it or get a new one?  Life is about choices and the consequences of those choices.  So what choice are you going to make?  Much love & blessings to you and your famlies.

Live strong,
Karilynn & Pipers Kitty smile

"You Hit The Nail On The Head".

Very thought provoking when you really thing about it we are in control of 100% of our thoughts, actions, and choices. Human nature sometimes tells us look for someone else to blame because of the circumstances "we" put our self in. I fall into that category more than I would care to admit instead of looking in the mirror at the person whose choices got me into the situation in the first place.

Choices, choices, life is full of choices. You post reminded me to live with my good choices and try my best to correct my bad ones, and the program makes me look in the mirror more often.

HUGS to you and Pipers,
RLC

Love your post!!

So right on. Same as using that same nail, have to get rid of the labels too.

I have been married to an XA and have suffered but suffer no more, that doesnt make me a co-dependent forever. I deplore labels. Just my own thing.

I agree however sometimes in life people back us into a corner and even after we have changed the hammer and nails and even tried sqrews it still doesn't work.

Don't misunderstand I woln't give up however I am tired.

Trying to keep the faith,

Great thread Karilynn.

I once read that every choice we've ever made has brought us to where we are.  Letting that sink in, we have to take responsibility for our situations.  Even when things happen that are out of our control, we are responsible for our many choices pertaining to how we react.

It's daunting to think about all the different choices we could have made and how those different choices would have completely changed our lives.  I see choices not as a "either/or" , or a fork in the road, but more like a million paths I could take.  I just do my best to choose the one that feels best and that will hopefully give me the best outcome.

p.s.  I think I would forget the rusty nails and "choose" to use galvonized screws.  They cost a bit more but are less apt to corrode.
