New Here

I am the mother of an addict.
I am also fairly new to al-anon, so I hope you will be patient with me as I learn.

The chaos of this disease is overwhelming at times.  But we are working on taking care of ourselves now.  For so long we let his addiction dictate our feelings and household.  If he was doing well, then we felt better.  If he was missing or struggling, we felt axious and sad.

We are making progress, but we also have work to do.  I don't know how this will turn out for our son.  I don't even know if he will survive this.  But I do know (after many mistakes on our part) that he is the only person who can save himself.

Thanks for listening.  I look forward to learning here and getting my life back.
:)
Dash

Dear Dash
I would like to welcome you to MIP and alanon.

I understand how difficult it is to have a child who has been touched by this disease.  You have come to the right place.  Here you will be heard and find new tools that will help you live with this disease by focusing on yourself , living One Day at A Time and with compassion for the alcoholic .

It sounds as if you already know that you did not cause this disease, cannot contol it and cannot cure it.  That is a powerful start.  Please try to find face to face meetings in your community and also try to attend our on line meetings held her 2xs a day.  You are not alone and it is so important to share and find new solutions
.

Help with finding local meetings near where you live may be found at the following web site:            http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/meetings/meeting.html            Or call: 1-888-4alanonOnline meetings are held in the Al-Anon chat room associated with this site.

From the board click on Al-Anon Group Meeting/Chat Room in the yellow box in upper left of the page.  After clicking on the link please be patient, sometimes it takes a while for the window to open.

Using a search engine such as Google, and searching for Al-Anon can find other online meetings.

Please keep coming back

(((Sheryl)))

Welcome, glad you found MIP.

As you said the chaos of the disease is overwhelming sometimes. The disease not only consumes and destroys the addict, but also anyone it comes in contact with.

This board is great and there are many wonderful members who will give back to you what the program has given them. The only way to keep the Al-Anon program is to give it away.
You will receiver experience, strength, and hope......how others who are walking or have walked in your shoes dealt with similar problems this disease caused in their life.

I hope you are attending face 2 face Al-Anon meetings in your area. If you are not please do. There you will find the help you need to make your life better whether the addict in your life is still using or not.

Again, glad you found us......keep coming back......find a f2f meeting as soon as you can.......your life will get better.......Sheryl you are not alone anymore.

HUGS,
RLC

I too have a alcoholic/addict son and say spinning in the sand until I found this site. I have gained strength through the support and know I cannot cure him. It is so hard letting go and letting God, but that is what may be the only thing that saves him from this life. Glad you found this place. It helps just being able to vent with someone that has been in the same place that you are in. Very wise people on this site ... that is for sure. Good Luck and God Bless you.

Aloha Dash and welcome.  You have found the first step both parts 1 and 2.
Step 2 also pertains to him.  I had to surrender myself and my alcoholic wife
over to the care of God as I came to understand God in the program of Al-Anon.
In turn when she attempted sobriety she had to do the exact same thing...so
my prayer for her was "Please stay with her as she comes to reach out for you."
If she had continued to rely of me she would not have made it or even come
close as I came to understand.  I tried my best with what I had to save her not
even knowing that it was alcohol and drug addiction which were taking her.
When she found the hand of her Higher Power and wanted to get sober what
and how she did it became my only metaphor for humility.

Visualize my alcoholic wife sitting on the edge of her bed on her first day of
rehab with a bag over her head and keeping that bag over her head for 2 weeks.
Visualize her saying in explanation what she said to the person who came to her
on the first morning to lead her into the program, "The bag is over my head
because I have come to understand that if I don't allow myself to be blindly
led thru this process I will never come to it on my own."   Thats a paraphase of
it and it came from an a fellow Al-Anon member who witnessed it.  I thought
she'd never make it.  I was wrong.  There is hope if we get out of the way and
Let Go and Let God.

Keep coming back miracles here are common place and yours are coming.

(((((hugs))))) smile

Jerry, I always appreciate what you have to say.
Thanks for the wisdom. smile
I am so praying for miracles again;
I thought I had given up hope,
but as long as you all have faith,
I think I can trust God to rebuild mine.
aww

Yes, it is me.  Unfortunately, I cannot get the page to work for the meetings.  I have tried several times on both my desk top and my lap top.  I gave up.
