The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I did a google search and saw some out there, but none that seemed suitable for my daughter. She tried Ala-Teen and didn't like it. She didn't even think I was an alcoholic, so she initially resisted all of this and I think right now she still doesn't really know what to think. I really just want to try and find some way to reverse some of the damage done to her, while she is still young and has not yet tried alcohol herself. (She's 15).
What I'm looking for, I think, is something that would sort of parallel the twelve steps somewhat (but not quite so completely - something she would be willing to at least look at, that wasn't necessarily focused so much on alcohol as LIFE.) I think she has many of the same problems I had before I started drinking, and I'd like to give her some solutions to these problems before she decides to use alcohol as her solution.
This might take the form of a book she could read, or of a book I could read and then use to help her with.
I don't know of any books specifically. I would get her the daily alateen reader...or even the daily alanon readers especially Hope for Today as that is geared more towards ACOA. They all have great messages.
Other than that I would google fiction books for teens with alcohol themes...I know there are scores out there about kids growing up in A homes. The fiction might make it more tolerable for your daughter....less like self help or being different. Give her an idea that others have been thru the same sort of things.
HI - Al-Anon prints a book called Courage to Be Me . for teens ,it keeps the focus on the teen not the alcholic , has very positive messages on self esteem , self worth etc - so if she doesnt think your alcoholic thats ok all teens can use positive messages , right ??
I don't know of any books specifcally for teens sorry I just wanted to say how great it is that you are being so proactive and realizing this is a family disease and that all of us need recovery. I just think you are doing a great thing by trying to get help for your daughter... sheesh I wish someone would have thought of that when I was young. You are clearly working a great program Kudos to you !!!!!!!! Blessings to you and your daugher
Well thanks everyone.. I may have to write a book on the subject myself some day I found a couple of books that might help by Claudia Black - "It Will Never Happen To Me" and "Straight Talk". Will be ordering "Courage to Be Me".
