ARG... justice for Alanon Members

So I keep reading about people who go to treatment and find a sense of inner peace, and a solid chance to get on their feet with support.  This applies to those in substance as well as emotional issues.

SO I start looking around for a center that might have an out patient or in patient based service for Emotional Issues (i.e. co dependency, post traumatic stress, you get the idea) and there are centers, but insurance won't pay for it.  I am really upset about this.  If I were an active substance abuse I qualify instantly, but because my addictions are more on the emotional level apparently I am fine.  I don't mind doing the work.  What I mind is that my addictions (which number in greatness) are as important.  Come to think of many people with substance addictions also carry emotional addictions as well.  Addictions on any caliber cause medical issues.  I am ACOA myself and I know that many people that ACOA suffer from IBS.  I know I do too (sorry for TMI), but it's true.  Has anyone encountered this?
Thanks for listening... I am just frustrated.
ARSK

do you have access to a dietician at your clinic? i too suffer from ibs and my dietician put me in touch with a councellor to deal with my emotional issues - which in turn is helping to control the ibs as i am manageing my stress better.. it may sound an odd way of getting help but it has worked for me...
hope this helps!

Does your insurance cover counseling?  Some does.

The other thing is that Al-Anon and other 12-steps groups offer help for all those things -- at a price we can all afford.  If we had to pay what Al-Anon is worth, I don't think anyone in the world could afford it.  We're the architects of our own recovery, us and the group and our HP, however we understand that.

Hi ARSK,

I hear you. I recall that my AH was very resistant to in-patient treatment, whereas I would have loved to go! All that growth and development! Of course I never want to qualify smile.gif

One of the centers he went to did offer a specialized codependent week for people that needed more support in getting underneath their codependency. I inquired about cost and it was VERY expensive, however, they did advise that it is sometimes possible to get a grant for worthy cases where funding is an issue. I'm not sure if it's worth it, but it may be worth seeing if you could qualify for financial as well as recovery assistance.

Hugs, Rocky

Thanks,
I am currently doing ACOA, ALANON and soon Codependency Groups... I have been working with a therapist and psychiatrist for the last five years. .... so I am making the rounds.
What I love is the idea where you can spend 6 to 8 hours a day really focusing on the issue at hand. Right now I am scrambling to go to meeting to meeting, work and have a social life. I just would like the same curtsey. The opportunity to be in a central area just working on me...
For now due to the cost.. I will continue with my meeting, my therapist and my psychiatrist..
@miss lucy I am working with a nutritionist on weight management, so I'll ask her about the IBS there. Thank you for mentioning it!
Thanks for your thoughts.
Alicia

Hello, I have codependency and I was also abused. I also have depression-- these are all mental illness issues-- if your insurance covers for outpatient counseling then it should also cover inpatient. I got inpatient help by becoming so desparate I told my psychologist that if I did not get inpatient treatment that I was going to kill myself-- this gets the insurance to pay , if you get my drift--
it may seem desperate to say if you mean it or not-- but I do believe that I was dying...
