Staying in the now

I started to read a new book.  It talks of staying in the now.  That our thinking draws from the past and future.  I almost put it down when I started as it difficult for me and a different concept.  I read at night  to close down my brain.  This was making me think, but I thought what the heck.

It talks about our minds and what we think about.  We clutter our heads with thinking about the past and the future.  we bank our happiness on that.  If I keep going to alanon I will be happy next week, month year.  WE think about the past If I could go back to then, if that hadn't happened...etc  While we do that we shut ourselves out of now.  I then took it's suggestion to listen to my thoughts.  WOW not alot of them would bring anyone happiness and they did focus on the past mostly...some in the future

I was doing the dishes and was relating all of this to alanon.  A saying came into my head: when we have one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow we are pissing on today...what a moment I had...first looking at the thoughts...then trying to stay in today and then thinking How in the heck many days have I pissed away???

So I had to come and post this.  Want to make myself accountable.  I am going to stay in the now ( or try to just for today)  I will let you know how this works either tonight or tomorrow AM.

peace,

fishinmama

Welcome  mama . a long time ago I heard a speaker say  when u live in the NOW  u have Won ,  and I tend to believe him .
I also heard a woman say that she wasted alot of time waiting for her past to change .  Carry on with the book it sounds awsome .   In  Al-Anon we have a saying ,  I have the right to look back but have to be responsible enough to not stare .  Funny how one idea can be put so  many different ways .   Louise

I think there are good points to looking to the present.  I also see huge benefits in grieving and letting go of the past.

Thre years ago, I began reading E Tolle's book, The Power of Now and just like u described, it hlepd me to get into the right here, right now and stop obsessing on past & projecting into the unknown future (that isnt reality).

It freeed me and allowed me to be aware and open to the unlimited possibilities HP/god has in store for us.  Fixating on anyone outcome, takes us away from god's potential, imho and that book really helped me get that.  tyfs
