Some of you may remember a post I made in September of last year called "Meeting one of the voices in my head".
I wrote that after having met one of my recovery "heroes" whom I had heard on a speaker cd 4 yrs before I got to meet him in person.
I was at a Serenity Celebration in San Antonio a couple of weekends ago, and I was listening to a female member of AA tell her story. She lives in the area and I have heard her speak before. But this time she was telling how she had suffered a great loss of someone she loved in December of 08. And began describing how she had met him at a conference in August of 08, the very one I had me my "hero" at.
The more she talked I finally realized she was talking about the same person.
She and I both got to meet him for the first time at the conference.
Then he suddenly passed away on December 22, 4 months after I met him. December 22nd is my birthday.
I was stunned. And quite sad about it. He was such a great man.
So I am writing this tonight, because I feel like I need to put it out there into the world how I feel. I haven't really processed all my feelings about this yet, and this is helping me to focus.
I want to say one more time what an honor it was to meet you Ed. And I want to thank you for helping me to learn to reach down inside of myself and find forgiveness where it was hiding all along. Forgiveness for my ex-wife. Forgiveness for myself.
I looked up to you before, and I will continue to do so.
You truly were a giant of a man.
And so family, if ever you get the chance to purchase one of his speaker cd's, I would certainly recommend his to you, especially if you are having trouble forgiving. His story is amazing and humbling.
He was Ed M. from Davenport, Iowa an extremely grateful member of Alcoholic's Anonymous, and a beautiful human being.
I want to say one more time what an honor it was to meet you Ed. And I want to thank you for helping me to learn to reach down inside of myself and find forgiveness where it was hiding all along. Forgiveness for my ex-wife. Forgiveness for myself.
With love, David
Thank You David for that beautiful post.
Your tribute to your friend was admirable.
I copied the quote about forgiveness because I believe that one of the biggest gifts that I have received from alanon is the ability to forgive myself and others for past mistakes.
The 10 th Step also keeps me current in this action and I have truly given up judging, blaming and criticizing anyone else.ODAT.
thank you so much for you recommendation. What a great life to come so far in recovery. We write so many posts about the one's who never get there. That man certainly seems to have made an incredible difference.
Elvis, What a loving share. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Take care of you my friend.
He lives on in you. Your recovery is such an attraction to others. You are one of the people I look up tp and I respect your program. I feel that through your program and shares I have been able to get to see a side of Ed. Thank you for sharing him, and of course youself, with me.
(((((((((((((Elvis))))))))))))))))),
Yours in recovery, Mandy

I am sorry for the loss of your "giant" friend Ed. I can't quite imagine you calling someone "giant" but nonetheless.
Just another reason that December 22nd is a very special day ~ a David and Ed kinda day. You were blessed to have met him and now you'll always remember.
love in recovery, Maria
