Searching for a Sponsor

Hello, I live in Texas and have been in Alanon for years and have not found a
good sponsor. At the present time I have a temporary sponsor in which I did my 4th
and 5th step with. I feel much better about myself since going on and taking the
leap of a 4th and 5th step. I feel like the person who is my temp. sponsor is rather
quite and not requiring me to call her, so I not sure if this is right. I have heard you are to be checking in with your sponsor weekly. If anyone out there is willing to be
my sponsor - let me know.

I grew up in an alcoholic home and then married at an early age of 18. Yes, I married
an alcoholic and I thought love would cure it all.  I have two grown daughter's  the
oldest is a recovering alcoholic she has been sober for three years.
She is planning a visit this weekend and we will attend an Alanon meeting together -
it is great sharing the program!
Since taking my 4th & 5th I am learning to keep the focus on me - it is amazing that just months ago I was wanting to get out of my marriage. I was still trying to change the A - now I know I can't change anyone but me. My life has taken a turn and I am
enjoying my days!  One day at a time!

Aloha Melinda

Selection of a sponsor is definitely a very personal experience.

I was picky about who I'd choose as my sponsor. I went to meetings for probably at least three months or so before I decided to ask someone. I kept my eyes open for someone who exhibited a calmness and rationale that I desired for myself. This person also needed to have worked all the steps them-self, and have their own sponsor. Those were my personal "requirements".

How a sponsor works with their sponsees is really a unique experience. Some expect phone calls and visits at regular weekly intervals, and then others leave it up to their sponsee to take the initiative.

The nice thing is, if you're not feeling like you're getting what you need from your sponsor/sponsee relationship, you can find someone else. You're not stuck for life with someone. :)

Earthwoman...I was told that this was my recovery and would work it as best
as I could.  It's up to me to contact my sponsor whenever and sometimes just
to say hello, how are you and is there anything I can help you with this time?

Sponsors are members just like us and often times need support.

(((((hugs))))) smile
