How do you edit a post once it is posted to the boards?

needed to edit a post from last week, saw a correction i needed to make.....is this possible?  I see where posts have been edited but i can't figure it out....

I haven't started a thread in a while but for sure when I respond to one, a new button appears near the Quote & Reply buttons & it says edit post - I thought it popped up if u created a thread too.

Hope that helps.

The edit buttom doesn't stay there always.  I don't know if it's a few hours or 24 hours but at some point it vanishes.
