so far, i have only mentioned that my husband is addicted to pot. well i also have an alcoholic for a brother and he too is addicted to pot. my paternal grandfather was an alcoholic and died at 39. my brother doesnt live near me and im visiting him on my holiday. he is in his early 50's, divorced with 2 children who are bascially estranged from him. he lives alone and barley survives. he does work. but his body is slowly but surely giving away. just recently he had an stint put into his heart and suffers with blood clots. we are al waiting to get that call to say that a clot has gone either to his heart and or brain. he barely eats and sleeps where he sits. i dont actually know how he gets to work!!!!! i have expressed my concern regarding his drinking and smoking but always pushes it aside. he actaully has admitted that he is an acolohic, but does nothing about it, other than saying that he has cut back. i now actually think that he is addicted or at least taking valium(which they gave him when he was in hospital so he wouldnt get the dt's). i have also looked up where the nearest aa meeting is for him and told him where it is. is there anything else that you can suggest for me??or have i done and said all i can. its just so hard, even though hes a grown man, we just live so far away from him and he doesnt really have a support network of friends or family.
You know one help for you might be to go to an AA meeting. You'll see people there who have made it to the program. I've met people who made it to the program from being homeless. Some do. The issue is that no one can "make" anyone get sober.
What we can do is to take care of ourselves so that we are healthy.
Please try to get a copy of the book "Getting them Sober" Canadian guy has been kind enough to offer copies at the top of this page.
Actually you've done it all. You can try more and if his mind and will is still set against getting there for him then he won't get there and all kinds of stuff can happen as a result. The three choices of the alcoholic are sobriety, insanity and death.
What I learned here was that inbetween caring I had to practice letting go and letting God and then going to meetings or meeting with others in this family so I could go get cared for. If you are not taking care of yourself who is and what's the consequence?
