In the AA Promises, the last promise is "We will realize God is doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves".
God does not do for us what we CAN do for ourselves.
Just had that on the brain in the middle of the night here in the USA. Don't know where I first heard it but it comes to mind every morning when it's time to get out of bed.
The way I see it, is that our HP (as we choose to believe) gives us the tools/power to do things for ourselves. It's up to us how we use them or choose to use or use them at all. It's like people who come to recovery. We can show them what it's like. But they have to make the decision whether or not to work their program. Some choose to stay miserable. Some are not ready. Some are ready, willing and able. I've always said that answers come when we are most ready to receive them. So may be that's HP giving us a push in the right direction. Love and blessings to you and your family. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's your life. Take no prisoners. You will have it your way.
To me, the phrase is about PRAISE. I could never have gotten myself 'out of myself' and my codependent thinking without believing in the first 3 steps, summarized as, "I can't, God can, I think I'll let him." The ego would love to believe it can produce good things on its own. To me, ALL good things come from my HP.
"God is doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves"... because we are now allowing ourselves to be a channel for our HP. This is my understanding of the phrase.

The prayer isn't for Higher Power to change our lives, but rather to change us.
When I do my footwork and it doesn't come out exactly as I had planned but more often than not, BETTER that's when I know that HP does for me what I cannot do for myself.
A few weeks ago, I quit my job (ha ha). Bad economy for that but I was at the end of my rope. Well HP saw fit that perhaps quitting a job is a good thing when you have another job to go to which I did not. The CEO and VP of my organization asked me to stay on; they acknowledged how valued I am of the organization (my boss is another story) and they agreed to work with the boss. Long story short . . . another example of HP doing for me what I cannot do for myself.
Thanks for your thought-provoking posts, Maria

If I am not for me, who will be? If I am only for myself, then who am I? If not now, when?
I have to say I am always surprised, and should not be, when things turn out better than I would ever have thought.
When I am so low I cannot even think, when I put GOD where He should be, at the centre of my life and call upon Him, He never fails me.
"We will realize God is doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves". As long as we are doing our part, that is when God honours our work and adds the final touches that are beyond us.
And it ALWAYS only registers AFTERWARDS. not before, and not during, but AFTERWARDS when I begin to ponder the "How on earth did that happen ...", "How did I manage to get to this place ...". and that is when I realise, that it is NOT ME it is GOD that has done what I could NOT DO.
Miracles of putting trust in God as our Higher Power and the one who is far more able than us.
