I'm not a doctor, so I can only share what happens with my AH. He gets hoarse and coughs from acid reflux - which gets worse when he drinks. Its hard to say though what it is, I wonder if you can suggest a visit to a doctor? Your AH may or may not accept your suggestion, but it can't hurt.
If you're not getting to any face to face Al-Anon meetings I would lovingly suggest that you find the hotline number to Al-Anon in the white pages of you telephone book and find the places and times for the meetings. The hoarse voice and coughing are just two other things you have no control over and won't change with worry or curiosity. If he doesn't get to a doctor because he is concerned at least you will be on your way to letting him be responsible for him and you for you. I use to be curious as to why my alcoholic use to drink and disappear or fall down and get hurt or have affairs with whomever or a thousand other things. Recovery is my choice regardless of whatever else is going on with them.
I dunno. Could be. I think it also could be related to lots of other things. The thing is unless he is going to stop drinking it probably isn't going to go away so I would advise detach, detach and then detach some more.
you are all so right...detach. It's hard and just when I think i am there I take a few steps backwards. Thank you so much for the reality check. Oh and as for a face to face meeeting, I found a fabulous group that meets twice a week. \THANKS again!!
