brand new to all this, any advice?

hey there. My doctor has been suggesting al-anon to me for years but i haven't gone. What can i expect? My relationship is pretty much done, i have had enough of my partners constant drinking, anger, etc...i find that the more of a jerk he is, the more i jump through hoops to make him happy. needless to say it never works.

Welcome to MIP! This is program of recovery. Keep the focus on us. We sometimes become sicker than the A's. Go to a f2f meeting, read the literature, and talk to people. Someone has been where you are now.

In support,
Nancy

ryan, I like most here on MIP will suggest what your doctor has been telling you for years. Try Al-Anon. What have you got to lose? Nothing. What have you got to gain? Everything. Give it a try, not one f2f meeting, but continue to go once twice of three times a week. Make it a part of your everyday life. It won't change the A in your life but it will change you, because Al-Anon is about putting the focus on you and not the A in your life. That's hard for you to understand now, it was for me, but after two or three meeting it will become crystal clear.

This program has worked and been a life saver for thousands of people world wide. I am a testament to this program. It is free, all you have to do is walk through the doors, the program will take you from there. Apply yourself and practice the program in your everyday life. It would be hard to find someone who had been in Al-Anon for any extended time and practiced the program that would not say they were a sucess story. I certainly am. Your doctor gave you some good advice a few years ago. Take it.

hi everybody,
thank you for the responses and kind words. i guess i just don't even know what it is i am expecting or looking for. in all honesty i find the 12 step thing a wee bit strange. i thought that was for the "A". All that i know for sure, after a conversation entirely by accident earlier today with a recovering "A" , is that nothing i have done for years has worked, and i have allowed myself to be put down and treated in a very disrespectful manor. (that is my nice way of saying sh%t).

anyhoo.. as you have pointed out, i have nothing to lose. actually, if i were to be totally honest with myself i probably have known that this was coming for a long time, i just kept hoping that "it would work itself out."

((((Ryan))))),

Wow! How great is that that a doctor suggested Alanon! w00t.gif Welcome to the MIP family.  Here you will find great experience, hope, strength, wisdom and humor (good for the heart.gif ).  There is so much you will learn at your face to face meetings as well as here.  Come chat with us or join us for online meetings.  Just keep coming back.  The journey of recovery can be long and hard.  But it can be just as exciting and empowering as you discover more and more about yourself.  You will also learn about the disease of addiction.  The more you know, the better off you will be.

Recovery is about taking back your life, and living the life you so richly deserve.  You recovery is about you and for you regardless if your A chooses sobriety or not.  It's about living strong.   Much love and blessings to you and your family.

Live strong,
Karilynn & Pipers Kitty <-- the cat smile
