I have a question about the rules for a group conscious meeting. when you have one and then have the vote does majority rule. that is my question> thanks bigh
I attend 4 different alanon groups. In all 4 of these, yes majority rules on votes at group consciousness meetings.
I have heard of some groups requiring what I believe is called a plurality or something like that, which requires that a certain percentage of the "registered" members of a group need to be present in order for a vote to be valid. I however, have never actually been involved with a group that had these kinds of guidelines.
Yes majority rules at least in my area , motion is discussed for and against and then there is a vote either anonymously or by raising of hands . Majority rules.
What constitutes a "registered member" in an anonymous UNorganized "organzation"?
I have been attending face to face alanon groups for many many years in different cities and states and have yet to be asked to fill out a "registration form".
As Ala said, there are no registered members in an Al-Anon group. A group conscience/business meeting is attended by whomever wishes to attend (even newcomers) and if a motion is made, a vote is taken and the majority vote carries.
However, the great thing about Al-Anon is that the decision can be changed!! If the decision made during the meeting isn't working (e.g., how donations are made, how literature is purchased to sell; what closing is used, etc.) then at another group conscience meeting, a different motion can be made, discussed, and voted on. This process allows a group to grow and remain healthy.

We tend to work more by concensus (sp?) than majority rules - that is, if there is strong disagreement, we keep working at it until everyone can more or less stand the solution.
