sugar addiction

I  am interested in learning more about alcoholism and sugar addiction. I consider myself to be addicted to sugar, and worry that if I were to drink I could easily develop an addiction to alcohol, given that its likely to be in the genes and environment.

I seem to turn to sugar easily to comfort myself, and know I have a lack of control in this. Just wondered if anyone has any experience of this, or could reccommend any books to read.

I am right there with you AM. I truly believe that it is the same gene as alcohol. My father was A and all 5 of us kids are addicted to something. We've had drug addiciton, alcohol addiction, gambling but the most addiction we all have is "SUGAR! We are all overweight and neither of my parents were. Being overweight is not in our genes but that old addiction gene looms over all of us. 3 of my siblings had drug and alcohol problems over the years but seemed to be able to conquer them. Well, my brother (52 years) has not drank for a very long time but has never given up pot. Whenever he drank in the past he would always do cocaine. He went into rehab for 1 month and never relapsed to alcohol and cocaing again. But...there is the pot and the food. He never married so he is not responsible for anyone but himself.

I am in therapy for eating addiction. I am trying very hard to redirect my triggers. Thank God, I have never had a problem with alcohol but who knows...if it wasn't sugar...what it might be.

Take care of yourself and it is alway good to be aware of this if you grew up with addiction.

Love...Gail
ps----there are many books to read that I got from Overeater Anonymous which of course is a 12 step program. Also, a book called "Potatoes not Prozac" is a very good book that explains how food and alcohol are so much alike for the body. I cannot remember the authors name but I am sure you can google it. This doctor started out working with A's. She would put them on diets of high protein and sugar free for the aism and found out it work for food addiction too.

Sorry this is so long!!!
