I have made it a habit lately of starting my day by reading this prayer. Today I am concentrating on the passage "... Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me...."
It is an old Cherokee prayer I have had stashed away for a while now. I have posted it before, but there are a lot of new faces and I thought I would share it.
Take care of you! Great Spirit Prayer "Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, Whose breath gives life to all the world. Hear me; I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others. Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me. I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy Myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Thank you for sharing..I really enjoyed reading that and have printed that out to carry with me. The line that stood out for me today was :I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy Myself. Somedays I am my worst enemy.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE POST. I have been here for over a year now and had not stumbled across one of your posts with this in it. I hope you don't mind...I have printed it out for future use - TO GIVE ME STRENGTH NEEDED WHEN DEALING W/LIFE. You are an AMAZING man RTexas. Take care.
Well...I'm getting all kinds of messages today that seem to meant for me to read. The line that spoke to me was "Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me."

It is so good to read your second post. Remember that compassion is love with understanding. That understanding does not include pity for all that she is missing out on or misinterperting. This disease is dumb founding. When we can look and listen with a clear head it is difficult not to feel pain for the out right waste of what "could be" but isn't. That is the disease.
It helped me so much when my sponsor told me, "Feeling bad for them doesn't help them and it is only hurting you." It is what it is. Shake your head and then shake it off.
I hope the sun is shining on your part of Texas. Hang in there.
