Why would he do this? More on the friend saga...

I dropped the letter to my friend in the mail today, the one that I have been having such a horrible time with.  Today has been very bizarre since then.  I went to lunch, and I didn't think we would run into eachother, but my friend was there with someone else.  About halfway through my lunch, my server told me that my lunch was already paid for, and he pointed at my friend, signalling that he was the one who paid for it.  I told the server to kindly bring me my check, and I didn't want anyone else paying for my lunch.

I don't get it!  Last time my friend and I spoke, he was so hateful, mean and hurtful.  So why would he do something nice, and so passively?  I don't get it!

I don't know the backstory here, but it sounds to me like they are feeling guilty or don't want you to think bad on them.

Perhaps he was, in a quiet way, trying to make amends.  SOme people do it that way.   I think you should have graciously accepted his kindness, but the time to do that is gone.  DOn't look for him to make another positive gesture.  It will be interesting for you to see what happens when your letter arrives in his mailbox.

Good luck,

Diva

Perhaps it was his way of saying sorry for his part in the relationship or that he was just wanting to do something nice for you .  Why > only he has the answer to that question

I agree.  It seems it was a kind gesture, perhaps a peace offering.
Not allowing your lunch to be paid for may have made matters worse.  It's like rejecting the peace offering.
