My therapist helped me understand what addiction is not. I have very rare neurological disease that my neuros started giving me anti-convulsants for last year. After a few months I decided to stop taking them because they made me so sleepy. But very few people can just stop taking an anti-convulsant all at once especially at the amount I was taking them.
After I had a seizure a couple of weeks into weening off my A sister stated that I was addicted. I even wondered if I was. But after a few weeks later I was off of them and I have no desire to take them again- you don't get high off of them.
Withdrawals do not equal addiction. Addiction would mean I was taking more than I should. If I took them not for pain, but for pleasure. If I doctor shopped to get more. If I ever once craved the feeling it gave me. If I lied about taking them. If I stole to get more. If I loved it more than anything else.
None of that applied to me. What peace of mind that is.
My husband takes vicodan because he is in such pain from his feet. He was so scared of becoming addicted that he didn't take the prescriped amount. But because he is not dually addicted he has finally come to realize that it's okay to take care of oneself. Glad this gives you some peace of mind. That always helps.
Love and blessings to you and your family.
