Oh, Christy! Your poor tree.....I was just thinking about how beautiful ice storms can be....but how much destruction they leave behind. Looks like it is time to hand your tree over to HP. ((((tree)))
When we first moved here it was pretty small, maybe 7 ft. tall, and my son would always try to climb it, I was afraid he'd break the branches. Over the years it grew in to a beautiful tree (it's a birch) with lots of memories. Kinda sad really.
The ice is worse then last time. It's about an inch round on every branch. The weight must be incredible. If I opened my windows I could touch the branches they are hanging so low.
The whole thing is probably going to have to come down. It doesn't look too salvagable, but if there is any chance, I'll sure try.
I'm cody to this tree.."what can I do to save it"? lol Christy

Christy, where in Missouri are you? I'm in Joplin and it is awful here. So far we still have power but a lot of people don't. The news just reported that parts of the state have been declared disaster areas.
It started sleeting here around 9am yesterday morning and hasn't stopped except for periods of rain which just made more ice. I can't see any tree's down here but it's just a matter of time if this thing keeps going.
For the first time in my life I actually wish we had a fireplace. If we loose power we are in a world of hurt because this house is all electric.

i am so sorry about your lovely tree filled with memories.
[we have a big spruce tree out the front window of our house that my daughter used to climb. she is twenty one now and her tattered blanket is still hanging from one of it's upper branches. i would hate to see it destroyed].
((((christy's tree))))) I have been watching the storm on the news and was hoping you were spared the devastating beauty of it. Maybe have one of the "tree doctors" come check it out after the ice clears. Looks like the main trunk is intact, if it is, you can probably save the tree. I have a huge tree outback, I forget what it is, but we had some damage done to it in a wind storm. The main trunk was fine so we just trimmed off all the broken branches and let it go to see how it would be. It looked pretty funny the first few months, but once summer was in full swing the other branches started filling in the bare spots and it is back to its former beautiful self. Although when winter comes, we can see the many "naked" spots where the branches had to be cut down. So don't lose hope.
Welllllllllllllllll,,,the tree is now small stuff. I had a sewer back up that filled 3/4 of my basement. My son had a gig tonight so he isn't home. Thank God my daughter was here because her electricity is out. We tried to hold back the water with a shop vac until the sewer guy came but it was a losing battle Now I have nasty carpet in two rooms (son's room and family room) and it also went in to the downstairs bathroom which just last weekend got new tile and vanity/sink. I just painted it yesterday.
It's a pain in the arse but not too much makes me lose it these days. Even when I found out homeowners insurance doesn't cover sewer back up. What ya gonna do? Get all pissed off? Then what? LOL!
Both daughters came to my rescue, God love em. We hosed the cement off and bleached it. In the family room we saved the big screen TV and moved furniture back far enough so it didn't get damaged.
It's 12:30 a.m. and the oldest daughter just went home, this started at 6:00 p.m.. We just got-r-done.

Many people prune their trees ...I would wait til spring and prune back below the breaks,,,,and hey you never know new shoots may start appearing. I had cut down a huge maple tree to about 3 feet from the ground a turnk about 3 feet in diameter I obviously was not trying to save it in any way, and it started shooting new branches from that..............Good Luck
