Last night I watched a documentary about the Heavy Metal Band Metallica - it documented the band trying to stay together and put out a new album while their frontman went into rehab for alcohol and 'other unamed' addictions, mainly alcohol. I was actually really touched seeing the transformation that he made and the reactions from the other band members when he came back a changed and much more somber man. He said his life had become predictable and boring -always drinking and then waking up the next day drunk and in bed with a stranger etc, and that now that he is sober and aware and switched on to what is happening in current time he said life is exciting, he doesn't know what could happen.
I almost felt sorry for him when he told the band he would only work from 12pm -4pm so he could go home and have dinner with his family - he just looked quite vulnerable and like the hard shell was gone. It showed him going to his daughter's ballet recital, it showed him trying to write hard angry heavy metal lyrics when probably a lot of the fuel and inspiration behind it came from the previous lifestyle and drinking. It seemed that a lot of the drinking for him was about being macho and putting on that tough exterior so you couldn't get to the soft side inside and the fear that those that he loved would just leave him and pressure to perform.
It made me realise that it can be easy for others to resent the A but deep down they must all have this soft spot inside that they are afraid to show.
