Today I had to tell my boss about my back surgery, and that I need 4-6 weeks recovery time. I have worked for him for 20 years. The jerk has all the compassion of a dead trout. He told me that I have to find someone to cover for me or I have to quit. He told me that I don't need to worry about leaving him high and dry because he has someone to take my place. However, with her workload now she cannot help me. She would have to give up a building that she looks after now in order to take on mine. I need this job to pay for my $400.00 a month physical therapy. I have contacted labor standards but the outcome does not look good. An employer does not have to approve medical leave here. I guess I'm more hurt than angry thinking that after 20 years he would try and help me out.
Sorry you're going through this. I agree there doesn't seem to be much compassion. He's obviously caught up in his work adgenda, and doesn't seem to be very considerate. I'm sure HP will provide what you need. I understand your hurt, but have learned not to expect much anymore. That way we won't be disappointed!
gotta agree with nick...document document document. You might be able to get unemployment if he makes you quit because you are hurt. What state are you in? Every state is different but I know most will pay unemployment if you must leave a job because of illness. You just have to be albe to do some kind of work (if you have ever applied for medicaid or disability you will see that just about anything would count - they always say extremely disabled people are able to work). Ask your boss to put that in writing about having to quit if you can't find a replacement. Don't they have a medical leave policy? Have you contacted the bosses boss?
Here is a link I found for Canada termination. Canada it not "At Will" or "Just Cause". There has to be reason for termination. So far, I found nothing on medical leave other than maternity for Canada. This can be worked around though. Is it unsafe for you to continue your work with the condition your back is in? Could you working cause more injuring? There are laws for Canada to protect that. Hope it helps. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. It helps me keep the focus on what I can do today. Good Luck!
Shadow, sorry about your unsympathetic boss. That is really inconsiderate, and I would think he/she would be willing to negotiate with you. I agree, get everything you can in writing .
Most of all, I wish you a good recovery from your back problem.
Ditto to everything already posted shadow. I am in Australia so obviously the laws are different are you a member of a union? Hope he gets his karma. Luv Leo xxx
Unfortunately I have always been told that in business we are all replaceable. Which to me just ! I have been with my current company for almost 8 years now, and now that they are public, I have seen things I never would dream of! It disappoints me greatly. I have seen this company treat an employee who has been with them for almost 35 years with minimal gratitude. Whatever happened to companies taking care of their long time employees? That's how you use to build loyalty among your employees.
I don't have any answers for you dear one. Any employer would be lucky to have you. However, you must do what is best for you. Perhaps contact the labor board or social services and see what options you have. There may be some alternatives we don't know.
I will keep you in our prayers tonight and always. I'd take ya in if I lived closer. Pipers Kitty would love to have an extra friend to lavish her lovies on.
Love and blessings to you and your family.
Live strong, Karilynn & Pipers Kitty
