We had just gone outside with our little dogs about an hour ago. 10pm, I heard a skid then a thud. I said it sounds like a car accident. Remember now, I live in a rural county. so we have almost complete silence out here. Our dogs started howling. We thought surely someone on the blacktop heard it and will go help. About 15 min past we heard a car horn and decided to go check it out. Several others volunteer fire dept were there. Some of our neighbors too. One came up to us and said the driver was ejected from the vehicle on impact. He told us we did not want to get any closer. It was weird for him to be on the passengers side of the vehicle. The front of the car was wrapped around a tree. I would guess maybe a deer went across the road and he swerved to miss it. We will never know for sure.
We were up on the blacktop with his wife and kept another person from getting closer. It turns out it was the drivers girlfriend and her mom. The driver was just 16 and was on his way to visit her. They are just around the corner from us. The mother was told but not the girlfriend. They were sent home to wait. We know some people that know them. The grandparents were called out. The first neighbor we had spoke too said he had recalled the last number on the boys cell phone.I guess he told them there was an accident. The volunteer fire dept wanted everyone off the road before they moved the body.
I didn't know what to do. We decided to head home. We stopped by the sister of the girlfreinds mother and told them. They might not think to call them in a time like this. I called another neighbor of ours and told her. She knows them & the young boy who died. The grandparents were there for them when their boy was killed a few years ago. She was going to go be there with them. It turns out we do kinda know this young boy who died. We met him a few years ago at a few others homes. He was big for his age. I am feeling numb. He is in gods hands now.
We got settled in & Tina was going to go feed the outdoor dogs & our last 2 goats. She asked me to get a lite and come outside. She had found one and she was dead. We have had two females for about 6 years now. they are mother & daughter. They have not shown any signs of being ill or sick. We both found the other one at the same time. I was going to blame our dogs that were outside when Tina got home. But we have seen a dog attack on a goat. This is not what happened. We are not really sure what it was but I do know one could not live without the other. I am even more numb now & I need to sleep but...........................
How sad for everyone involved and living in a country town myself everyone is like family. You did a great job under really emotional circumstances. ((()) for your goats today I went to my friend's next door and her pet goat looks like she will have to be put down so I feel your pain. Have a cry and let it all out. Luv Leo xxx
One of my feral cats died this last week. I am not sure what it was. It was a kitten who was eating very well. I am never sure whether a dog came along or what. I have seen cats killed with not a mark on them, I think they just go in cardiac arrest. I have, like you, a deep deep attachment to the animals I care for. One of the other feral cats I have, Vida, went into a lot of grief about the kitten, she had adopted it. She got into quite a state and did not eat for a few days. I have had to really baby and buy her foods she would like to coax her back to living. Now she is banging on the door all the time wanting special treats.
There are times when I find life very very frail. My feral cats for the most part do pretty well but every now and then one of them has a mishap. One cat has kittens which she keeps hidden for quite a while then for whatever reason one disappears or they just don't seem to make it. I do try to take them into the feral neutering program and get them shots. Unfortunately or fortunately they have a policy that if the cat has something wrong with it they euthanize it, this is for the feral colonies not a regular cat of course. One of my most healthy looking cats had feline leukemia and I felt so guilty about bringing him in and then he was euthanized. I guess in the long run that did save the others because it is contagious.
There are some days when I long for the peace and quiet of the countryside. I know I once worked somewhere where it was super quiet during the day (it was semi rural) and I found that so relaxing. Unfortunately for me I live in an urban setting and it is noise, traffic and confusion 24/7.
