i kind of sort of understand how an alcoholic gets a sponsor in AA. the notion of having one in Al-Anon, i'd never heard of it before i came here. my local Al-Anon is inactive right now, someone told me a few of the old members go to CoDA but i can't make the meeting that one night of the week. how does one get a sponsor? are there online sponsors? how does it all work? sorry, big questions i know, thanks in advance for answers.
If your local al anon is in active, go to open AA meetings. The process is the same no matter what. Go to meetings and listen. Pray to the god of your understanding to choose the person you need to guide you in working the 12 steps, learning to live in recovery behaviors, and making recovery behaviors. Most AAs are also Al Anons--whether or not they have the opportunity to go to Al Anon is up to them, based on things like scedule or things like that. When your god of your understanding reveals who you are to ask, ask! Take the chance! The worst that can be said is no, and if that person does say no, ask if that person could recommend someone as a sponsor---who's program do they think is really good that they would recommend for sponsorship?
The way to find a sponsor is to find someone who you feel drawn to, someone you feel is working a strong program, someone who has time in alanon, and that you think would be a good match for you.
When you feel you have found that person, ask them. Please don't be discouraged if they say no, this is by no means a reflection on you. Some may feel that they are not ready to sponsor, and others may already ahve sponsees and may not feel able to fully commit to another one.
Yes we also so have people who do online sponsorship. Once again just attend the meetings (as I know you do) and your HP will lead you to someone.
Yours in Recovery,
