Today's reading speaks about learning to have fun and to play. The author states that were raised as a child of two alcoholic parents. They identify as being industrious and goal-oriented. Learning to play and have fun doesn't come naturally to them but they would like to include these forms of relaxation as part of their recovery. With their sponsor, they explore slogans and steps of Alanon such as Let Go and Let God, Easy Does It and Step 3 and how these may be applied giving the Alanon member the opportunity to enjoy some fun activity in their day. In the example in this reading, the Alanon member begins by making time to play with their dog and speaks about how that practice has become habit because their dog as a creature of habit shows up each night with an expectation of playing. Fun activities included as a part of the author's recovery are helping them to relax, let go and laugh "openly and hard." Thought for the Day Having fun is a part of my recovery one day at a time. With a decreased sense of always having to do something useful to justify my existence, I now allow recreation, enthusiasm and delight into my life.
From Survival to Recovery
*****************************************
This is an important reading for me because right now I'm feeling some uneasiness and want to cry Stop the world, I want to get off! It's an old habit of mine to accelerate my "industrial" side when life feels out of control. The reading is a great reminder to tap the breaks, slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery. Too much "doing" can be a slippery slope for me when it comes to my recovery. It's roots are fear based. The greater the fear, the more control is exercised. In another post here a member spoke about having a mantra. I would say mine at this time would be Keep the Faith and Have Fun. Something as simple as closing one's eyes and listening to beautiful music can be a great tension reliever. I really enjoy the outdoors and taking pictures. A friend and I have been doing this and texting pictures of our nature discoveries to one another. My avatar is one of her photos from our state of the glistening frosted trees after a recent snowfall. This mutual sharing of something that delights us, gives us joy helps us to feel less alone at a time when we can't visit in person. What do like to do for fun? At this time when there are limits on activities, it would be nice to know how others are including play and fun in their days. TT

Anxiety has been growing and I'm focusing on my breath, pausing (and without any story-telling). I started organizing and tossing and have a long way to go, but the good news is that I'm finally able to let go of many things I've been needlessly holding onto!
I love to have fun and play, I just don't seem to do it often enough though.
i have been watching funny animal videos on YouTube lately, especially in the mornings. I used to think they were so stupid, I didn't wanna watch anything like that when I'm "supposed" to be so serious dealing with an A and all the chaos and drama that goes along with that. Now though, I know I need some laughter and fun, even if it is a video of dog reactions going to the vet. LOL
We are getting some snow here. I'm hoping there will be enough on the ground tomorrow so I can go play in it with my dog. Maybe build a small snowman or throw snowballs. I don't care what anyone thinks if they see me, I do love playing in the snow,it makes me feel like a kid again.
