Abbreviation explanations

Hello to all,

I am new to the online group and to Al-Anon and making the baby steps to recovery, soon to find a group to go to that is not online, however reading through the topics and such I don't understand alot of the abbreviations....I don't mean to sound stupid..sorry but is there a page on this site or a book of where I can find abbreviations that you are all using here online?  (ie, f2f, active, a, etc....)

Thanks!

Hi sim1kag,

I'm having the same trouble and am asking as I go along.

f2f = face to face meeting   rofl=rolling on floor laughing   lol=lots of laughs  a or A=alcoholic

active= now drinking actively    omg= oh my god   A-h=alcoholic husband   a-w=wife

There is probably others I don't know or can't think at the moment, but hope this helps for now.

Good Luck   Blessings

Hi Sim, a big warm welcome to you. Congratulations on finding us and looking for a local group, you've taken the first step. I'm quite new online myself and didn't understand all the abbreviations. I just ask, especially if I'm in chat. Some are terms of the program relating to the disease or recovery and some are computer 'lingo' or as i call it 'text talk'. d53sjurne has answered some of your questions.

lol-can also mean laughing out loud. A-is alcoholic/addict as they may be either or both. If you see the term 'practising alcoholic' it means they are still currently drinking='active'. (I found this term very strange as my A certainly didn't need any more practice!) Recovering A, rec A or RA all mean the alcoholic/addict is in a recovery program and by inferrence they have some sobriety or clean-time. roflmao=rolling on the floor laughing my a** off. MIL,FIL,BIL,SIL=Mother, Father, Brother and Sister In Law respectively. pg-I think means pregnant/pregnancy. ACOA=adult child of an alcoholic/addict. ESH/esh=experience, strength and hope. ((((...)))) are hugs so if you see ((((sim)))) that means someone is giving you a big hug, comfort or sympathy.

I can't think of any others off the top of my head. If you come across any more just post them specifically and I'm sure someone will clarify them for you. I'm not aware of any links or site pages that list the abbreviations, sorry. Please remember there is no such thing as a stupid question in Al-Anon. We are all here to learn and grow and the best way of doing that is to ask questions and listen to others who share their ESH.

Welcome to our family and I hope you find some comfort, support and help with us. Also, when you do go to a face to face meeting (f2f) they usually have literature available for sale. There is a recovery bookstore here online with a link in the top left hand corner of the message board. Nothing as far as I'm aware that specifically addresses abbreviations but all are recovery-based and will give you a better insight into the disease and its effects on those who have lived with it.

With love in the fellowship,

Maria X

Hi Sim,

Nothing dumb about your questions. I have ot laugh becasue if I ever tried to figure out what my kids where saying when they send someone a text message or an instant message on teh computer, I would be lost. They have their own shorthand and all their friends seem to know it.

I think a lot of what you see it just internet shorthand. Ty is thank you, Tyfs is thank you for share.

3c's is short for you didn't cause it, can't cure it and can't control it.

ODAT is, One Day at a time

DH, DD. DS is dear husband dear daughter dear son.

A lot of people just abbreviate the obviouse things. Your best bet is like someone else said if you come across something you don't know the meaning of, just ask. No question is ever dumb.

By the way, welcome to  MIP (Miracles in Progress), I'm sure you will find the people here warm and compassionate. I have found this site to be a lifeline.

                         love Jeannie

Hi sim1kag

Welcome to the board, it is a great place to be.  I am pretty new also so I appreciated your questions.  I did not know what some of those abbreviations meant either so it helps me also.

Ria:  Your comment about your A not needing any more practice made me roflmao!!!!!!

I can't imagine any of our A's needing more practice.  Good One

Here are some things that have helped me since in the program.

  • Go face to face meeting & online meeting.

  • post on the board here on the site. I have gotten a lot of good feed back.

·        Set support system.  people do not judge. You need someone who can go for coffee on a bad day, or pick up a phone and call when in trouble. The support is what is important when you first this program.

  • Have a sponsor. Someone work one on one with you.

You don’t have to do this the minute u come to the program but I suggest that u do it when u can. It help.
