The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
The ODAT reading for August 24. speaks about the importance of honesty and candor. The reading suggests that as we practice the program, using the slogans and steps we come to the acceptance of the fact that our behavior, like that of the alcoholic, has been far from sane and reasonable. It points out that when we can do this without shame or embarrassment,we are able to break free of a hampering shell. This attitude is a sign of progress but if not all that Al-Anon can do for us. There are still many more heights to climb to reach serenity and a full life. Steps 4 through 12 really help in this process.
The reading goes on to say that if we come to be complacent and think we do not need Al-Anon. any longer. we should remind ourselves that Al-Anon can do much more for us than carrying us through the anguish of living with the problems of alcoholism. We can make great strides in fulfilling ourselves by using the Al-Anon principles and philosophy and will never outgrow the need for it
"Once I have overcome the problems the brought me here is a fellowship, I am confident that my continuing search for spiritual understanding will yield ever richer benefits"
I love the fact that Al-Anon is a spiritual program and that the principles and philosophy are applicable to everyday life.regardless of the fact that I'm dealing with an alcoholic or not.
I have been in program for many, many years and have shed many defects and am confident that I need this program every day so as to keep my spiritual life , growing, by allowing me to share my thoughts with like-minded others.
I found that doing a 10th step every evening keeps me focused on my growth .The serenity prayer and slogans are my go to tools. When I get distracted or tempted to rage. You see we do not become perfect human beings because we have been in program for a time. We simply have developed many powerful tools that serve us in times of stress and fear.
I'm truly grateful for the many gifts I have received from working this program and will keep showing up.
Thank you Betty for your service, the daily and your ESH. I love today's reading and can 'see' or relate to many elements there. What I love about progress in Al-Anon is when we actually see it, feel it and live it.....
For me, when I came, I just wanted them to stop drinking and the insanity to stop. Guess what? The former did not happen, which my crazy brain thought was the real issue and the elephant in the room...However, the latter has certainly diminished greatly. The only change that has been consistent and constant is the change in me through this program and my desire for a spiritual existence.
I still don't always understand why or how changing me brought sanity around me but it did/does. Each time I lean into this program, and life happens, I can more automatically pull a tool, apply it and maintain my serenity. I am able today to realize who I am and how I am has nothing to do with those around me - it's got to do with me, my sanity, my attitude and my choices.
It's gratifying to be calm in the middle of the storm. It's spiritual to be tolerant, loving and of service. It's enjoyable to live in the moment, embrace what is and see the good in it. I also can learn each and every day so long as I remain Honest, Open and Willing (HOW)!
Make it a great day - off to golf in a while....we have lovely weather and basement is still drying out! (((Hugs)))
