A realisation of the cunningness of alcoholism

The last few days I've had a realization of what i've read others refer to as the cunningness of alcoholism.

My partner is returning in a few days from rehab after 5 months. In the last  couple of weeks he has ditched his  aa and na meetings and now says he doesn't want to go to them when he is out as they depress him and its full of people 'not like him' ( previously, theye were the best thing..).now he is saying that after 5 months in rehab he has rid himself of 20 years of alcoholism and that all he needs is defiance, resilience and faith and he is determined to be a winner and will not drink again.

On the weekend he returned home and I couldn't visit as I had car problems, but he'd been to his alcoholic neighbours who was  drinking with a friend and they all had a converstaion around hops... My partner says it didn't bother him one bit and remains determined he wont pick up.

It dawned on me, that this is an example of the 'stinking thinking' I read about in my al-anon litertaure and  the power of the  illness which has conned him into thinking he is now cured and can go without meetings..

I am so grateful to al-anon  and  everyone here as I am now diving more than ever into my books and have started with a sponsor and am thinking hard now  about what I am going to do and what's best for me...although its not easy.

I feel I barely know anything at all about this illness as I appear to learn things all the time which highlights how ignorant i've been,  and maybe still are compared to many but I'm very grateful to this online community.

Thankyou.

Carmel Great awareness . Since the disease is cunning, baffling and powerful it makes a great deal of sense for us to keep the focus on ourselves, and practice our own recovery tools . Meetings, sponsor, slogans all kept me focused in the right directions
Glad you are here.

My AH used to tell me that he didn't need to go to AA meetings because all of the those people "had serious drinking problems," unlike him (who was ordered to go to AA meetings by the court after having two DUIs). Yeah right! Talk about being in denial!

Cunning, Baffling & Powerful. That's what we say about the disease in AA and tomorrow is unknown. Take care of you and your recovery!!

I love the part of you coming to realization...GOOD FOR YOU!!!  In spite of him not coming to the only butt you will be able to save is CJ's and I am in support of that at all times.  I remember having that major AHA!! moment when I started to get the cunning, powerful and baffling nature of alcoholism and I screamed UNCLE!!  I'm DONE!!.   Keep coming back and sharing your successes with us and we will do the same.   (((((hugs))))) smile
