Update/hubby/ICU

I'm not sure what to report here as Dr.'s aren't able to figure out what is going on either.
The good news is hubby is not in renal failure at this time, they were able to bring his potassium down to a more reasonable level with meds and insulin. High potassium causes, lethargy, confusion, swollen joints (which explains water on knee) and in severe cases coma. His liver and kidneys are still not functioning correctly, (they just got the potassium out).
The problem is, except for the swollen joints all the symptoms remain. He does not stay awake for more then 20 seconds and can doze off with a spoon halfway to his mouth, then he just leaves it hang there in mid air. He's very, very confused and I won't say hallucinating, because he's not seeing things...but he hears things. He answers questions I didn't ask that make no sense.
Blood pressure is a problem again. When resting very high (165/105..when stands, drops to 90/58.
Last night after being so pale, he got very flushed, face and neck red so Dr. ordered a STAT cat scan (thinking stroke), but it came back normal.
Blood work is normal, head is normal, chest X-ray normal..
Everything is normal but hubby with no explainations.
Late last night he was moved to ICU so he could have one on one care and be hooked to a heart monitor. He keeps trying to get up, "go upstairs" and go to bed.
I was there 15 hrs. yesterday and slept in a bit today (8:00) since he's in ICU I don't feel I have to be there 24/7.
It just wasn't safe for him to be alone in a room. I watched him after they dropped off his lunch, he couldn't figure out how to open the milk carton or unwrap his silverware. He probably wouldn't have managed to eat had I not been there, and they don't stick around long enough to see these things. Nor do they see the level of confusion. He knows who the President of the USA is, why wouldn't he? They've asked him 100 times..lol He has that one down.
But then he'll ask me what we are getting the kids for Christmas...
That I'll have to go to Denver with him..
Just strange stuff, some pretty funny, but most are bizarre.
Sooooo...
I really know nothing, I can only pray that his mental status returns to normal. It's very scary and it's impossible for me not to "what if". I know what will be, will be..I just pray it will not be this.
Heading back up there, just wanted to update since I couldn't yesterday..
love you all and thanks again for continued prayers.

Christy

Thank you so much for taking the time to post...your head and heart must be all over the place right now hun.

Wish I could do something practical to help out as You must really be in need of some live hugs and help with the more mundane things in life that have to be got through.

All I can do is pray and pray.....with all my heart.

Hang in there Christy,

Continued prayers for you all.

Thanks for the update.(((((Christy)))) My dad's blood pressure was doing the same this past summer and they never knew why but it was related to his heart. Once he got on the correct medications it eventually corrected itself. Praying that he has doctors that can figure all this out and that he will soon be home and in good health. I will be gone for awhile but will continue prayers. I do believe in prayers! cdb xoxoxoxo

hi, been reading your posts. I sure hope things get better. You must be so afraid.
The way he is mentally could be meds or a combo of them too.

Sure hope someone figures it out. Keep us posted. love, debilyn

Christy: I was in the hospital for a long long time when I was a child. When my friends who were in the hospital with me had surgery they often seemed to go through periods of intense confusion for some weeks afterwards. That seemed to occur most when they were in ICU. I think it could be meds or an after effect of being really ill. I saw in more than one of my friends and saw it with other people who were in the hospital when I was when they were actuely ill.

I do hope that they are able to stabilize him and get his medications down and his blood pressure ok.  I think the doctors and nurses do see a lot. Clearly they are taking care of him if he is in the ICU and there will not be as much pressure on you when he is getting that 1/1 care.   I am concerned about you being exhausted and wearing yourself out. I do hope you will take time to rest. I doubt you are getting  much of that at the hospital. Obviously this is a very very high stress time for you and I hope you will take care of you too.  You are very much worth it.  You have been going and going and going with this for some time now.

My prayers are with you.

Maresie.
