Not currently dealing with A

I posted last night a brief introduction about myself... As I'm reading other posts, I see that many people here are currently dealing with the A in their daily lives. That is not the case for me... So I was curious, who else out there is working the program but is not currently dealing with the A? Who is experiencing the need for change within themselves because of the affects of the A?

My childhood has snippets of dealing with the A, but most of my problems are because of generations of abuse from different A's... does that make sense?

Just looking to see if anyone is in the same boat as me... Because sometimes I'm not sure how to contribute or take things away from many of the posts I am seeing.

Thanks!

Jessie

Hello Jesse,
I grew up in an alcoholic home, married an alcoholic, who found recovery in AA seven years before he passed and had a son who died from alcoholism after being in recovery in AA for several years. I have been a member of Al-Anon for a very long time and have continued to attend meetings, work the steps, slogans, call my sponsor and sponsor others even though. at the moment, thanks HP, I am not living with the disease of alcoholism.

I truly believe, as Al-Anon states, that alcoholism is a family disease and the attitudes and negative thinking that I grew up with have effectived me forever. Al-Anon is a spiritual program and if I do not continue to practice this spiritual program I will slip back into my unconscious mode and the spiritual awakening that the 12 step speaks of will no longer guide my actions.

I know I will always qualify for this program and it has served me well I found contributing to others by identifying with their experience and sharing what program tool works for me is a great way to connect. Right now, possibly you could just share what you're thinking and feeling and your hopes and dreams . I'm glad you are here

I pray that you find an ALANON or ACOA group in your community that will provide additional support for your recovery .

My parents were not alcoholic and each parent had a parent with the disease. Family members died of alcoholism prior to my birth that I didn't know about until I was about 55 years old. I married an A. My son is an A. My x is deceased. My son doesn't live with me but is an active A.
My life experience is that we live, work, attend church, shop, go to the gym, share the road and attend workshops with untreated As. Al-Anon is for those of us who have been affected by As. I doubt anyone could say they haven't been affected by someone with the disease. The program helps us counterbalance the affects of alcoholism whether or not we are living with an untreated A. It also helps us clear away some of the denial that many of us enter the program suffering from at the time. I was blind to just how many people in my life had the disease until a few years of recovery or more and I found myself wondering how I ended up with an alcoholic to begin with even though I didn't have alcoholic parents. The more we work the program, the more that is revealed about the ways we've been damaged by the disease and how prevalent the disease truly is in our culture. I highly recommend the program and on-going recovery work.
