Hello Lookingup - there are others here who are more experienced with this than I but I do find a gratitude list really helpful and do it every evening.
Mine takes the form of thinking of the three best things of the day but sometimes, when I need a more forceful fix I just go through all the positives that I can think of such as I'm grateful for my health, my dog, the sunshine, the new fish in our pond, my brother, my best friend etc.
The asset list is something that I've only recently found out about and today I found out how helpful it can be. A couple of weeks ago I added a list of three personal assets to my journalling. Today, with a bit of crazy stuff going on, I sat down and read my journal and when I came across those lists of assets it really helped to restore some of my self esteem. So the type of assets that I had listed included 'kept calm, smiled a lot, patience, resourceful.' So my interpretation of assets is a list of positive personal attributes. Hope this helps.
I do not think there is any rule about using these tools.
I did an asset list as part of my first step four using the blue print to progress booklet, but I do try to add to it.
as for gratitude that can be used any time. This disease made my thinking very negative and dark.
an old timer told me to cite the alphabet and think of at least one thing for each letter that I could be grateful for.
it really does lift your mood. When alcoholism brought me down I could use gratitude to focus on all the positives in my life rather than focusing on the negative. What I focused on grew.
think an asset list really helped me to know myself once again and see all the potential that I held within.
I had been so outer directed that I had lost touch with whom I was , what I could do, how I thought. etc The asset list enabled me to look within and start to appreciate my gifts
It may be difficult at first because we think it impolite to say good things about ourselves but it is not impolite and is extremely important recovery tool for all who have lived with the disease of alcoholism.
Start slowly and take the time to look within I am sure you will find that you are:
An Intelligent, kind, compassionate, woman. You have managed your finances well and are a loving mother and friend.
Now think of some yourself
Gratitude list could list
Your health, your home ,enough food to eat, your friends Now you add to this.
Each day look at your list and add to it.
Before you realize it your self worth and esteem will increase.
Good question
