MY AS has admitted he is powerless over his addictions... Need advise

Hi all, my AS has finally admitted that he is powerless over his addictions. I can only hope and pray he has found his bottom. He is downstairs this very minute. He says his body is craving alcohol. He asked if he could stay with us tonight so he would not have to be alone. He called a good friend of ours and his who is planning on taking him to his first voluntary AA meeting tomorrow afternoon. He went while in rehab but that was forced. I can only pray it's his HP will that he follow thru with it and goes.

I am astonished at how I was able to handle the situation this afternoon. Such a difference. This program is what gave me the tools to handle it with more grace than I ever thought possible. There was no screaming or yelling, just love, pride and encouragement for this move toward step 1.

I need advise as what to do with someone who is going thru withdrawal I my home. Seems to be more mental withdrawal then physical.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Sally I am glad that your alanon tools worked so well for you at this difficult time. You have worked hard on your recovery and your serenity and courage in the face of this situation is a powerful example of how this program works
I have experienced an at home detox for my son. When he decided to detox , he went to his GP, obtained a prescription for Librium and then used that prescription to keep the withdrawal symptoms under control.

I must caution you that alcohol withdrawal, without medical supervision is extremely dangerous and if someone drinks when they are taking the withdrawal meds it could also be fatal. My son did that once and o I resolved never to agree to an at home detox again.

Many years ago, my husband attempted to detox at home and went into severe convulsions . The ambulance had to be called and it was touch and go for a time

If your son is in your home now, it might be good idea to go to the ER for assistance. I pray that you and your family find health and happiness

He absolutely needs to go to a detox center. You may want to start in the emergency room. It's terribly dangerous to do it without help.

We have no idea what is going on inside him. He needs his vitals watched! This is serious!

He may act like he knows it all, but believe me, he needs help. He is very sick!

I hope for the best for him.

Give him suggestions and let him do the work...if he doesn't do the work he cannot stay.  I went thru this process with my son also and ended up "divorcing" him like I did his addict mother who I was also powerless over.  If he can call his friend to get to a meeting tomorrow he can call the hospital and ask for help.  Will he do as much for him to save his life as you would?  That is what I had to know with my own son.   He didn't then and then he did and now has relapsed at a much older age and won't again.  I am just as powerless now as I was then.  The disease doesn't respect me or my love for my son and I'm not his Higher Power in anyway shape or form regardless of how many years of recovery I have.  If he is willing...he will call.  Prayers for you and him.   (((((hugs))))) smile

I am glad your program is working for you. I never recommend detox from alcohol or drugs at home ever. Many things can go wrong such as cardiac arrest, system failures etc. The detox centers and even the Emergency Room or hospital are much more equipped to handle that to ensure a safe detox. My AH tried to detox himself from Meth at home, it was a disaster and after about 24 hours he couldn't stand it so went and used again so he could feel better, he was sad and depressed then because he knew he wanted to quit, but he wasn't ready for his HP help.

Please let us know how things are going. My prayers are with you.

Hi all , thanks for all your responses. I've had a good day . He did follow thru and went to his 1st meeting tonight and says he is going to another at 7 in the am. He is going to see his dr also tomorrow. His suggestion , not mine. He is going to have to do this on his own.

Glad to hear that he followed through on AA today and that he was okay physically. Many prayers for all of you, Sally.
