soooo... He went in to a detox rehab voluntarily a few weeks ago. The next day they sent him to the hospital because he complained about his leg. He was diagnosed with Wernicke's Disease. He stayed there for a week detoxing. They were going to transfer him to a physical rehab place for a week to get his legs stronger, but somehow he was able to walk better while there so they sent him home.
he had a great frame of mind and it was soooo nice to see him happy and smiling again. He was productive around the house. he went to AA meetings. Not sure what happened, but he fell off the wagon and it's been pretty bad this last week. A roller coaster of ok and bad days. His sponsor met with him for lunch on Saturday. the sponsor saw some promise in him. I've barely been home since then, and I don't really speak to him when I am.
Anyway.... I know he will die if he continues to drink. The hospital, his sponsor, friends and I have all told him this. he's even read about it. I wish I could lock him up in detox again.
We have two sons together. I try to keep life as normal as possible for them..... But they truly don't know what a normal healthy home is like.
I am so very sorry to read of this Alcoholism is a progressive fatal disease over which we are powerless. Living with the disease certainly does affect all family members and I urge you to please search out alanon face to face meetings in your community and attend. Here you will find great literature and new ways of viewing life. You will also receive support from members who understand as few others can and will support you as you travel this painful road.
Keep coming back here as well You are not alone

I'm so glad you have found some meetings. Keep going. When I lived with this kind of craziness with my AW, it took me a few meetings and a lot of self-discovery to see how I had changed in relation to the disease. Having Al Anon meetings helped clear my head and understand I'm not the lone ranger out there. And then I was able to start making rational decisions again, this was especially important as I have a young one to take care of that my wife couldn't when she was active. Keep going to meetings, and keep coming back here!
Hotrod... I started going to f2f meetings on Friday. So far 3 in 3 days.
Pinkchip.... Wernicke's is not reversible if the drinking continues. I'm not sure if he is taking his vitamins. It can be sustainable if he works at it. It will not get better. I have a feeling he's had it for a long time. Nobody has diagnosed it until just recently. His last hospital stint before this one (a year ago), he had pancreatitis and colitis. I'm sure he had Wernicke's back then too, just not near as bad as now.
And... Actually.... The Wikipedia printout the nurse gave me was for Wernicke Korsakoff.
When it is that bad you can petition to have him committed. Don't know if that is right in this case but you usually need proof that the person is about to kill themselves through their drinking or drug use. I think his medical problems are enough. Talk to a lawyer maybe.
Hmmm... Not sure... I asked somebody at the hospital if we could force him into rehab. They said not because of alcohol. I don't remember who I spoke with.
Btw, he actually took a taxi to come get his car, then pick up our sons from their day camp, then came back to pick me up.... And yelled at me most of the way home.
