NyQuil

First off I will admit I should not be checking up on the A. I have been back and forth to my house taking things out and I notice that he is drinking NyQuil. I understand I am powerless over him and alcohol...but I am dying to ask people here...would you count NyQuil as drinking alcohol??? It has alcohol in it. He tells me it's the other ingredients that help him sleep. Hmmm...right. He does not have a cold. I am just curious about your thoughts. I find NyQuil to be a crutch...it's not vodka but it contains alcohol. hmm

And I have always noticed the NyQuil being around in the past before he would start up on the "real" stuff.

When my A had quit drinking for a while, he started up on the NyQuil.  A friend who works in a psychiatric unit said she sees it often.  Yes, it counts as drinking.

Yes, it counts. As an active A steeps deeper into the disease, they become desperate for anything that gives a buzz. Often, if too many downers are taken, they start taking uppers to stay awake, rinse and repeat.

I hope you have something wonderful and nurturing planned for yourself today.  A walk, a meeting, coffee or tea...

You would be shocked at an alcoholic will drink. Mine did the nyquil bit when he was gearing up. They will drink cooking wines, extracts, listerine .. if it has eythol alcohol .. they will drink it. I heard one story of a shoe polish sandwich .. this was in the depression .. some A's would soak bread in a melted shoe polish mixture and eat that to get the feeling of being drunk. The other thing is energy drinks .. even the ones without alcohol .. my stbax would say he had similar feeling to getting high and drank them by the 4 pack. Now reading what I just wrote how crazy and insane is this disease that is the lengths someone would go to .. just to get high. And I wonder how my thinking for so distorted in the process? Thank you alanon for teaching me to get out of the thinking. Hugs

It's amazing, alcohol is everywhere! My recovering AW has gone and thrown out all kinds of stuff - Nyquil, vanilla extract, Scope. It's hard enough to stay sober when they don't pick up their favorite drink, but to get knocked off the wagon by taking something that has alcohol in it and not realizing it, that's really horrible!

When the lack of Vodka was not there Nyquil was the next best thing for sleep with my son. When he doesn't have the alcohol he can't sleep because the body is in withdrawal and Nyquil will help him because of the alcohol. He drank a whole bottle at my house on evening. Also mouthwash is used. It comes down to them making the decision to stop all the madness and we can only pray they will hit their bottom someday and seek that help.

I know for a fact when my son is trying to quit he is in terrible shape because of lack of sleep... it's really hard to watch him suffer.

Let go let God because you can't control him or cure him.

((( hugs )))

My husband has always had an issue with sleep. I feel bad for him. But he also has sleeping medication. Nothing seems to help. :(

I use to look for things with alcohol in it but it drove me to want a drink . For me to grow and learn that what the alcholic does is what he does . It only affects me when I'm stuck in the middle of it , trust me we always get pulled in . I stay so far away from those flashing caution lights that might lead me down to see what there doing . When I start I start to wonder what he might be doing I pull my elastic on my wrist to remind me hey mind your st take care of you and it works . Sadly to say I have drifted so far from my alcholic sober but yet so dry that I no longer bother to look or wonder anymore I have enought energy to take care of myself . My friend it takes time a lot of you to focus on this to is a selfish program we take care of us first .
